TO ALL WHOM IT. MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, M. A. MYER, of Decatur, in the county o f Macon, and State of Illinois, have invent-ed certain new and useful improvements in Machines for Blacking Boots' and Shdes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawinlgs, making a part of this specification', in .which l Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the machine; and
Figure 2 represents a side elevation thereof.
Similar letters of reference, where they occur inA the separate gures, denote like parts of the machine in both of the drawings. I A
My invention consists' in the combined action and operation of a blacliin g and polishing brush driven by machinery, and so that whilst in motion, the blocking brush maybe extended down :to the blackingbox for its supply', as will be explained.
To enable others skilled in the art to .make and usc my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with referenceto the drawings.
On a base r support, A, is placed the frame B, for holding the several parts 'of the apparatus. C is a shaft, revolved by a crank, D, or otherwise, and has upon it av gear-wheel, E, that meshes with and 'turns a pinion, F, that is supported upon a st ud 'or bearing in the frame B. There is connected tothe pinion F aci-'ankwheel, a, to which one end of a pitmamG, Yis connected, the other end of said pitman being attached to an arm or lever,M H, fastened on a shaft,-J, ,also supported in the-main frame. In two projecting lugs, ce, attached to the main frame, there is supported-a rod,'cZ, which is jointedeat and has'a button or knob,j', at'its'upper end, and a blacking brush, g, atvits lower end, and is,4 moreover, guided 4by the -rods tij, the former passing through a support, lc, attached to the main frame, andthe latter,j, passing through a slot in the end ot` `the' vibrating lever H. The rod dis held up in the position shown in the drawings by means of a spring, Z, but may at any time, and whilst in motion, be pressed'down until its brush, g, will come in contact with the` blacking, the bok containing which may be placed in tle .recess m, and held vin place by the button n, and -onbci'ng released its The arm -or. arms H on the shaft b receive their vibratory motion from the crank-wheel a and impart it to the shaft b and to the polishing brush I, connected to it by a rod, o. Underneaththis polishing brush there is .a'yielding stool or foot-support', p, by which a`boot or shoe may be turned or properly supported and presented to the polishing brush after it has received the blacking from the other brush, g. The brush ghas also a reciprocating motionrgven to it by means of'its guiding rodj, passing through one of the levers or arms H` which lever or arm., as before stated, rveceive's its motion from the 'crank-wheela.
The operation of the machine is simple: The blackingsbeing placed at m, and thel machine set in motion, the brush g is forced down into it by pressing o n .the knob f, and when supplied .itfis released and is raised up by the reactionary spring Z. The boot or shoe is then placed' within the influence of the brush g, andreceives a coating of blocking from it. It is then placed on the support p, where it is presented to the polishing brush and speedilypolished.
Having thusifully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;- v L v I.
In combination a polishing brush-having a reciprocating motion, a blacking brush also having a. reciproeating motion, and capable alsokwhilst in -motion, of being thliust down for a lsupply of blacking, and rising again whilst it contin'ues to vibrate or reciprocate, substantially as herein dsscribed and represented.
' M. A. MYER.
