To all whom t may concern:
Be it known -that I, WILLIAM SPALcK- HAvER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklyn,) county of Kings, and State of New York,have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Printing-Machines, fully described and represented in the following specificationr and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates generally to bed-andcylinder printing-machines; and the present improvements therein consist in means whereby the mechanisms ma-y be readily adjusted in that correlation requisite for the production of sheets of varying lengths without the necessity of resetting the main working parts thereof, by which invention the machine is adapted to the speedy making and printing of sheets of different sizes, all of which is hereinafter specifically pointed out and claimed.
A practical embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of so much of such a machine as will illustrate the sheetreceiving and impression cylinders and the parts coacting therewith, the view being taken, partly in section, through some of the parts on a line just within the outer or gearside ends of the cylinders. view of the same, the parts being complete, although the forward end of the web of paper operated upon is shown as broken away. Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof taken on the section-line 3 of Fig. l and as seen looking in the direction of the arrow 3 thereof. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the paper-receiving cylinder and includes a part of the impression-cylinder, the View being taken just outside of their driving toothed wheels. Fig. is a sectional plan of the receiving-cylinder, taken on the line 5 of Fig. 4f. Figs. 6 and 7 are respectively side elevations of the two members of the compound adjustable driving segment-wheel detached from each other, as seen looking in the same direction. Fig. S is an elevation of the compound adjustable driving segment-wheel in one of its adjustments.

hended in a companion application filed of even date herewith, and, like those shown in said application, the printing mechanisms of this machine do not differ essentially from an ordinary bed-and-cylinder printing-machine and may be of any of the various types thereof, the species illustrated being known as a stop-cylinder, but the devices for'arresting and releasing the cylinder are not herein illustrated, as there are many varia-y tions thereof, a good example of which and one applicable to this machine being shown in said companion application.
The impression-cylinder C is mounted upon a shaft 10, journaled in the side frames, and is provided with a toothed wheel 20, by which it is driven from the bed-rack 2l.
The bed B reciprocates horizontally, running in this instance upon. a series of rolls 5l, which support it in its to-and-fro travel in proper relation to the cylinder C. This bed is driven through abcd-rack 23, projecting from its under side, by means of a toothed wheel 22, that is mounted upon a shaft 24, that is embraced by the bifurcated end of a connecting-rod 32, which is driven by a crank 3l from the main shaft 33. The shaft 24 is provided at its opposite ends with pinions 6 7, that are much smaller than the wheel 22 and which run in short xed racks 25 26,whereby their limited travel causes the bed to make a greater movement through the wheel 22. Said pinions 6 7 also carry on their outer sides bearing-rollers 27 28, which run on rails 29 30, whereby the pinions are guided and their wear reduced.
The upper cylinder A is a sheet-receiving cylinder which is mounted on a shaft 9 0, and the lower cylinder C is an impression-cylinder that is mounted upon a shaft'lO. The wheel 20, whereby the cylinder C engages with-and is driven by the upper bed-rack 21,
also meshes with a wheel 34, fast upon the4 shaft 90 of the cylinder A, and drives the same.
The sheet-feeding cylinder A is of peculiar construction. -(SeeFig. 5.) Itsdriving-wheel 34 is keyed to its shaft 90,-and its barrel or body portion is fixed to one head H, that turns freely upon said shaft, while at the other end this barrel or body has a head D, that em- ICO braces said shaft and rest-s against the inner face of the wheel 34, which latter is provided with a curved slot 18, through which protrudes the shank of a clam pin g-screw 39, that is tapped into said barrel. This barrel or body of the cylinder may thus be adjusted in various circumferential positions with respect to said wheel 34. The barrel or body of this cylinder A is providedat one point with a cutting-blade 11,which is preferably mounted fixedly in a holding-box and preferably with its cutting edge projecting to the surface of the body of the cylinder, and at an opposite point this cylinder is provided with sheetgrippers 12, that are fast on a shaft 5, which is journaled in the wheel 34 at one end and at the other in an arm 78, that is fast upon the shaft 90, which grippers l2 coperate in taking the sheet with bearers 19, that project from a rod 70, which is likewise mounted at one end in the wheel 34 and at the other in the arm 7 S, and the body or barrel of the cylinderAis recessed circumferentially throughout so much of its periphery as is necessary therefor, as at 96, to admit the operation of the grippers 12 and permit the unobstructed adjustment of the barrel or body of the cylinder when the position of the cutter 1l is changed with respect to the grippers 12.
The grippers 12 are normally maintained in contact with the bearers 19 by means of a tumbler 42, fast on the end of shaft 5 outside of the wheel 34, having one end fast to a spring-seated rod 77, that is guided in an eye fast to said wheel. This tumbler 42 is vibrated to operate the grippers, so that they may take a sheet at the receiving-point, by means of a stud 74 and so as to release said sheet at the delivery-point for its transfer to the impression-cylinder C by a stud 75,which studs project fixedly from the side frame.
At the front side of the cylinder A there is provided a rocking cutting-blade 2, that is mounted in a holder 36, the shaft 50 of which is journaled in the side frames, which shaft 50 is provided with a rock-arm 37, that is attached to a spring-seated rod 33, by the action of which the cutting-blade 2 is rocked to perform the cutting operation. Said cuttingblade acts at a constant cutting-point and coacts with the cutting-blade 11, that is carried in a rotary path by said cylinder, and its rocking motion to perform the cutting operation is permitted at the proper time by means of a rock-arm 40 on one end of the shaft 50 of its holder 3G, which arm 40 is controlled by means of a cam 41, that is fast to and is adjusted with the head H of the body or barrel of the cylinder. This cam 41 is fast on the head H of the cylinder A, (see Fig. 5,) and hence is adjusted with thecutting-blade 11, so as to always maintain its relation thereto,and acts to normally hold the cutting-blade 2 out of cutting position. The paperis moved into the machine by the conjoint action of the cylinder A and a feeding-roller 9, which latter is journaled in the side frames so as to run nearly in frictional contact with the periphery of the cylinder A, and the web of paper is carried to the roller 9 by feedingrollers 55 54, which rollers 9, 55, and 54 are journaled so as to run in surface contact and are geared together for movement in unison by means of pinions 58 57 56, constituting a train that is driven by means of power intermittently applied to the shaft of roller 9, the means being a friction-pulley GO on its end at the gear side of the machine, which pulley bears with frictional driving contact upon a compound adjustable driving segment-wheel composed of two side-by-side members 62 G3, one member 63 of which is fast upon the shaft 90, while the other, 62, although loose on said shaft, is locked to the member G3. The inner or fast member G3 of this driving-wheel is illustrated in Fig. 6, and the outer or adjustable member G2 is illustrated in Fig. 7. These members are provided with a segment or enlarged surface of like extent, that coincides with the periphery of the cylinder A and is equal at least to the length of the desired short sheet. The outer member G2 is provided with -a curved slot 4, coinciding with its periphery, through which slot projects the shank of a clamping-bolt 64, whose inner or threaded end enters a tapped hole iu the rim of the inner member (i3, the result of which construction is that when the screwbolt 64 is loosened the outer member G2 of this compound wheel may be adjusted circumferentially on the shaft 90 and the two members 62 63 be secu red tixedly together by the clamping pressure of the bolt 64 exerted upon the edges of the slot 4 and thus be given any position of relative adjustment required for feeding the length of web necessary to produce a desired length of sheet. By means of this adjustment the operative surface proj ectin g from this compound wheel may be extended to any desired length, so that its action as the sole driver for the friction-wheel 60,
l fast on the shaft of the paper-feeding roller 9, may be shortened or prolonged according to the length of feed necessary to the desired length of sheet may be attained.
The impression-cylinder C is furnished with grippers 13, that are fast upon a shaft 14, journaled in the cylinder-heads, which shaft at one end is provided with a tumbler 15, that is so acted upon bya spring-rod 53 as to normally hold said grippers closed down upon t-he surface of the cylinder. This shaft is rocked appropriately to take the sheet from the cylinder A as it is released by the grippers 12 by means of a stud 85, (see Fig. 4,) and is also rocked appropriately to deliver the sheet from the machine by means of a stud 86, (see dotted lines, Fig. 1,) which studs project fixedly from the side frame in like manner as do the studs 74 75.
The delivery apparatus for the printed sheets from the impression-cylinder is composed of a set of pulleys 8, hung on a short shaft that is journaled in arms hung from a IOO IIO
rock-shaft 67, that is journaled in the framework, and said rock-shaft 67 is provided with a rock-arm 68, attached at its free end to a spring-pressed rod 69, by which said pulleys 8 are held in close relation to the periphery of the impression-cylinder C,being prevented from actual contact therewith by the action of pulleys 84, which run on the margins of the sheets andy of course press against the sheet on the cylinder. This shaft carrying thev tape-pulleys 8 and margin-pulleys 84 also carries near its ends pulleys 95, that run on the unbroken part of the cylinder and thus prevent the said pulleys entering the gripper-opening as they pass the same. From these pulleys 8 carrying-tapes'72 run outward to the delivery end of the machine and return over pulleys on the shaft 73, and this shaft 73, carrying these pulleys, is provided at one end with a driving-pulley 79, from which extends a driving-band 8O to a drivingpulley 81, the shaft 93 of which is in turn driven by a band 76, extending from a pulley 98 on shaft 93 to a pulley 88, mounted on a cross-shaft 94, that is driven by a pinion 91, which gears with a driving-wheel 92 on the main shaft.
The cylinder A is provided with guards 48 49, arched to conform to its peripheral line and supported from rods, which guards hold the passing sheet upon the cylinder. The cylinder C is provided with guards 45,coincid ing with a part of its peri phery,to prevent the paper from falling away from its surface, which guards are sustained by rods 87 89, and with a conductor 46 to guide the sheet to the tapes 72.
The position of the cutting-blade 11 is so adjusted with relation tothe grippers 12 of the sheet-receiving cylinder in the principal views as is necessary for the production of sheets of a length nearly equal to one-half the circumferential extent of that cylinder.
The operation is as follows: It being understood that the rolled paper web W is mounted in bearings at some suitable point, so that its end may be led thereto, its free leading end is threaded through the feeding-rollers 54 55 9 and entered between the latter and the periphery of the receiving-cylinder A, where itis maintained between the guards 48 and the cylinder within the range of action of the mechanisms. Itis also to be understood that the cutting-blade 11 always operates at the same point or where the moving cutting-blade 2 may cooperate with it and that the cam 4l is always adjusted with the cutter 11 so that the `cutter 2 will rock in timely coaction with the cutter'll, whence it results that the cutting operation is always performed at the same point with respect to the feeding-roller 9 to produce the sheetv no matter what its length may be, which point coincides with that at which the grippers 12 take each sheet. It will thus be apparent that when a given length of paper is to be detached from the web the relation of the cutting-blade 11 with respect to to be adjusted to suit the length of sheet det sired and t-hat the compound wheel 62 63 will require that its outer member 62 shall also be adj usted, by means of the clamping screw-bolt 64, so that its projecting part or operative periphery shall in circumferential extent be equal to the length of the desired sheet and also be equal to the distance that the cuttingblade 11 is set from-the grippers 12 and bearers 19. This simple adj ustmentpof the parts having been made the mechanisms will be in operative positions suited to the production and printing of a sheet of that length. When, therefore, the end of the web WV then depending between the guards 48 and the periphery of the carrier A is being approached by the grippers 12 then traveling forward in the direction of the arrow of cylinder A and are opened and closed under the action ofthe stud 74 to seize the end of the web, the compound driving-wheel 62 63 will simultaneously set into motion the friction driving-pulley and through it the feeding-roller 9, and the rollers 54 55 feed the web onward. The grippers 12 thus operated seize the end of the sheet about simultaneously with the commencement of its forward movement, pass onward, and hence move with it around upon said cylinder concertedly with its feeding movement, thus carrying it smoothlyand with uniform speed to the surface of the impression-cylinder C to which it is to be transferred. As the head of the sheet is brought within the range of action of the grippers 13 the said grippers 12 and 13 are concertedly operated, the grippers 12 to release it and the grip'pers13 to seize it in like manner as sheets are transferred from `cylinder to cylinder, said grippers 13 thereboth, an extent of the paper web equal to the distancebetween the grippers 12 and the blade 11 has passed the sheet-receiving point or that loccupied by the vibrating cutting- Vblade 2, the latter will be quickly vibrated to sever the web at this point, and thus detach the predetermined sheet length therefrom. Simultaneously with this cutting operation the high part of the compound driving segment-wheel will pass off from the periphery of the frictionally-operated feeding-wheel 60 and the onward feeding movement of the web by the roller 9 will cease, its severed end then depending `between the guard 48 and the periphery of the receiving-cylinder A in position to be again advanced at the appropriate time.
If now it isdesired that a longer sheet shall be the product of the machine or any length IOO IIO
within the range of the length of the shorter segmental projection on the compound Wheel 62 to that of the greater extent of the surface produced by adding to it the segment-surface of the wheel 63 through the adjustment of the wheels 62 63, the same may be accomplished when the other companion adjustments are properly made. Thereupon, although the cutting mechanisms Will operate at the same point as before, the. relation of their'operation to the action of the feeding.

These adjustments will cause the desired length of sheet to be severed fromw the web and the saine to be 4printed and delivered, and, sol adjusted, the mechanisms will run on during the edition without requiring to be reset.
In many of its features this machine does not dier essentially from that'shown andV broadly claimed in my application, Serial No. 616,377, filed December 2l, 1896;` but the extensions and improvements thereon which are illustrated and described herein are v claimedv in modification thereof, as follows:

The combination with a shaft, of a gripper mechanism supported thereon andfixed with relation thereto, a cutting mechanism one member of which is supported on the shaft independently of the gripper mechanism and is adjustable circumferentially about the shaft and with respect to the gripper mechanism, and the othermember of which is supported externally to the shaft, and means carried by the shaft for controlling the operation of the second member of the cutting mechanism, said means being adjustable about the shaft, substantially as described.

The combination with azshaft, of a gripper mechanism supported thereon and fixed with relation thereto, a cutting mechanism one member of which is supported on the shaft independently of the gripper mechanism and adjustable about the shaft and with respect to the gripper mechanism, and the other member of which is supported externally to the shaft, and means carried by the shaft for controlling the operation of the second member of the cutting mechanism, said means being adjustable about the shaft simultaneously with the adjustment of the cutting mechanism, substantially as described.
5. The combination with ashaft, of a gripper mechanism supported thereon and fixed with relation thereto, a cutting-blade supported on the shaft andcircumferentially ad'- j ustable thereon, a second cutting-blade supported externally to the cylinder, and means carried by the shaft and adjustablewith the first-named cutting-blade for controlling the operation of the second blade, substantially j as described.

The combination with a shaft, of a gripper mechanism supported thereon and fixed with relation thereto,y acylinder supported on lthe shaft and circumferentially adjustable l thereon, a cutting-blade carried by the cylinder, a second cutting-blade supported exterl nally to the cylinder,and means carried by the shaft andadjustable with the cylinder for 'controlling the operation of this blade, substantially as described.

The combination with a shaft, of a gripper mechanism supported thereon. and fixed with relation thereto, a cutting mechanism A supported on. the shaftindependently of the gripper mechanism 'and adjustable circumi ferentially aboutv the' shaftiand with respect to the gripper mechanism, andweb-feeding devices, substantially as described.

The combination with a printing-couple, of a shaft supported externally thereto, a gripper mechanism fixed on the shaft for receiving sheets and transferring them to the printing-couple, a cutting mechanism supported on the shaft independently l of the gripper mechanism and adjustable circumferentially about the shaft and with respect to the gripper mechanism, and a Web-feeding mechanism, substantially as described.

The combination with a printing-couple, of a shaft supported externally thereto, a gripper mechanism fixed on the shaft for receiving sheets and transferring them tothe printing-couple, a cutting mechanism supported on the shaft independently of the gripper mechanism and adjustable circumferentially about the shaft and `With respect to the gripper mechanism, a web-feeding mechanism, and adj ust-able means carried by the shaft for controlling the operation of the Web-feeding mechanism, substantially as described. p
14. The combination with a printing-couple, of asbest-receiving cylinder, a cuttingblade carried thereby, the cylinder and cuttin g-blade bein g adjustable circumferentially about the shaft of the cylinder, a second cutting-blade supported externally to the cylinder, means on the shaft of the cylinder adjustable simultaneously with the cylinder for controlling the operation of the second-cutting-blade, a gripper mechanism fixed on the shaft of the cylinder, a Web-feeding mechanism, and adjustable means on the shaft of the cylinder for controlling the operation of the Web-feeding mechanism, substantially as described.
