NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
THEODORE H. MAYTAG, OF LAUREL, IOWA.
WINDOW-SHADE EXHIBITOR AND PROTECTOR.
srncr'isIcA'rIon forming part-of Letters Patent No. 616,950, dated January e, 1899.
Application filed Tune 4, 1897i Serial No. 639,424. (No model.)
To OLZZ whom, t may concern:
Beit known that I, {[Hnononn H. MAYTAG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laurel, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Window-Shade Exhibitor and Protector, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide an improved case adapted for concealing and protecting window-curtains and for suspending and displaying and interchangeably and detachablyconnecting curtains therewith at pleasure.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 shows a transverse sectional view of the holder or case. Fig. 2 shows a front 'elevation of the complete device with parts broken away to show certain features of internal construction and also showing a number of curtains therein partly drawn downwardly and detachably and interchangeably connected therewith. Fig. 3 shows an end elevation of the device and by dotted lines a changed position thereof.
The case is composed of two parts, each being semicircular in cross-section and preferably made of sheet metal and hinged together at their upper ends by means of the compassjoints 12, which are formed on the end pieces l1. Shoulders 13 are provided, whereby the movement of the compass-joint is restricted to a half-circle, as clearly illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3. Hence when the casing is opened to its full limit the straight edges of the ends will be at the bottom and will be extended in a horizontal plane.
Fixed to the interior of each end portion, near its straight edge, is a plate 14, provided with a series of inclined open slots 15, of such size and shape as to admit the journals on the ends of a curtain-roller.
rllhe reference-numeral 16 is used to indicate a plate having a series of openings 17 therein. A similar plate is attached to each section of each end by means of a screw 18 a considerable distance below the center of the said end piece, and said plate is projectedy from the center of the plate outwardly.
The reference-numeral 19 indicates a rod or hanger device having a hook 20 at its upper end, whereby it may be detachably fixed to an elevated support, such as 21, and 22 indicates a screw passed through an eye in the lower end of the rod 19 into one of the open- 'ings 17 in the plate 16.
ing will assume the position shown by dottedv lines in Fig. 3, and inasmuch as the rods 19 are attached to the sides beyond the dead-center of each a preponderance of weight will be on the hinged edges of .the hemispheres, and hence the casing will be held in this position.
It is obvious that by moving the point of attachment of the rods 19 relative tothe plates 16 it will require more or less power to open or close the casing. However, in either of the positions which this point of attachment is capable of assuming the casing will be held in either its open or its closed position when placed therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is-
1. In a case for protecting and displaying curtains and consisting of two mating semicylindrical parts hinged together, mating plates having inclined open slots fixed to the inside faces and straight edge portions of the ends of the case for detachably and interchangeably connecting curtains therewith, plates having a plurality of openings fixed to the outside faces of said semicylindrical parts and hangers adapted to be adjustably constraight edges of the said ends, rods having hooks at their upper ends and eyes at their lower ends, and screws for connecting the eyes of the rods with the plates having screwseats, all arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
THEODORE H. MAYTAG.
