IUNrrn TATES PERCY R. IVILDE, OF BAT H, ENGLAND.
UTILIZING FLAMES 0F GAS-BURNERS OR THE LIKE FOR HEATING PURPOSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,564, dated December 27, 1898. Application filed May 23, 1898. Serial No. 681,538. (No motlelJ To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, PERCY ROBERTS WILDE, a subject of Iler Majesty the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 23 Circus, Bath, in the county of Somerset, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Utilizing the Flames of Gas-Burners or the Like for Heating Purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, I have appended the accompanying drawing, representing one burner.
A gas or other burner A-is fed from a supply-pipe B, and the flame O is caused to impinge upon the end of a wick D of absorbent but refractory material, the other end of which is fitted into a tube E, communicating with a tank F or like receptacle holding water, which may percolate through the wick 1), controlled by a cock G or equivalent regulating device. The water as it percolates through the wick is brought into contact with the free end of said wick, which is maintained at a red heat by the flame 0, thus causing decomposition of said water and consequent evolution of hydrogen, as well as oxygen. The chemical change produced causes the colorless flame of the burner to become yellow and semiluminous and supplies additional gaseous fuel for the combustion, causes the radiation of increased heat, and insures the destruction of the noxious fumes or products of imperfect combustion.
In the drawing I have shown a single burner; but I may use a series of these, each provided with a wick and forming a stove or heater; but in all cases the principle of action remains the same.
What I claim, and desire to secure byLet- V
