APPARATUS FOR CARBURETING GAS.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,302, dated September 29, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWARNER EH. 0 KEEFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Garbureting Gas; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon ,which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an apparatus for carbureting natural gas, or natural gas combined with any other gas or gases. A
The invention consists, substantially, in the features to be hereinafter distinctly described, and pointed out in the claims.
The drawing illustrates in vertical section one form of apparatus adapted for carrying out my invention.
A represents a carburetiug chamber or receptacle for carbon or hydrocarbon. This chamber is provided with a top opening, B, through which the carbon or hydrocarbon is fed, and a top cap, 0.
D represents an inlet-tube for the gas, said tube extending into the chamber A through a suitable opening in the bottom of the chamber. The lower end of the tubeD communicates with a casing, E, arranged below the chamber A. This casing E is provided with a slide-valve, E, which communicates with an exit-tube, G, arranged within the chamber A, as shown, and extending through the bottom of the latter, and provided with a burner, H.

J represents a hollow arm or plate projecting from the chamber A above the burner H, to aid in heating said chamber.
The natural gas (or the mixture of natural gas with another gas or gases) passes through the tube I and easing E into the tube D, from which it escapes into the chamber A. It then passes downward through the exit-tubeGto the burner H, where it is ignited. The heat from this burner heats the chamber A and its contained carbon or hydrocarbon, which latter then charges the gas, thus effecting the carbureting.
The valve F affords a means for diluting the flame of the burner.
Having fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a carburetor, the combination of the chamber A, having top opening, the inlet-,
tube entering said chamber at or near one end, and an exit-tube leading therefrom at or near the opposite end and terminating with a burner, a casing provided with a valve arranged between said tubes beneath the chamber, and a supply-pipe communicating with the casing, all substantially as described.
2. A carburetingchamber provided near its bottom with a hollow arm or plate, in combination with a gassupply pipe, an outlet-tube terminating with a burner below the hollow plate, and a casing provided with a valve connecting the supply-pipe with the outlet-tube, as and for the purpose set forth.
