This invention relates to fire-escapes, its object being to provide a durable fire-escape which shall be simple and efficient, may be prod need at comparatively small cost, and be easily repaired when necessary.

Heretofore fire-escapes have generally been expensive and complex in their construction and not always simple and efficient in their mode of operation, and have therefore been objectionable to many persons in places where the lawis compulsory as to the erection of fireescapes. To avoid these objections and to provide an escape that will meet the requirements of the general public and enable persons of ordinary means to supply their houses with safety appliances are objects of my invention.

The invention consists, broadly, of a central post or pillar, a spirally-twisted bar secured to the post, and a spirally-bent way secured to the bar. An inciosing casing will also preferably be employed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a central post with a projecting bar extending spirally around it, to which the spiral way is secured, the barbeingintegral with the post. Fig. 2 shows a cross-sectionaily T- shaped post twisted spirally, the stem of the T-forming the bar to which the way is secured. Fig. 3 is a view, partly broken away and partly in section, showing the escape and inclosing casing. Fig. 4 shows an angle-iron spirally-twisted to form the post and bar to which the way is secured. Fig. 5 shows a cylindrical post and a spirally-twisted angleiron secured thereto and to which the way is secured. Fig. 6 shows a cylindrical post and a spirally=twisted T-shaped bar secured there to, the way being secured to the stem of the T and the head of the T being curved to fit the post. Fig.7 represents a wooden post having a wooden strip arranged spirally thereon and secured thereto and to which the way is secured.

All the figures are partly broken away, and in all of them the inclined spiral way is indi cated by h. The way is provided with a series of perforationsj near its inner edge for the passage of securing bolts or rivets means of which it is secured to the spirally twisted bar on the'supporting-post, to be hereinafter described.

Referring to Fig. 1, a indicates the central post, which is provided with an integral spirally-twisted bar is, to which the way is secured, as before described.

In Fig. 2 is shown a cross-sectionally T- shaped bar I), spirally twisted, the stem 70' of the T forming the bar to which the way is secured, as before described.

In Fig. 4 is shown an angle-iron c, spirally twisted, the member k of said iron forming the bar to which'the way is secured.

In Fig. 5 is shown a cylindrical post f, to which is secured a spirally-twisted angle-iron f the member 0 of said iron forming the bar to which the way is secured.

In Fig. 6 is also shown a cylindrical post f, to which is secured a spirally-twisted T-iron, the head Z of the T being curved to fit against the post and secured thereto by screws or similar fastening devices. The stem 70 of the T serves as the bar to which the way is secured.

In Fig. 7 is shown a cylind rical wooden post f, to which is secured in any suitable manner a spirally-arranged wooden strip 70 which serves as the bar to which the way is secured.

- In Fig. 3 I have shown the cylindrical casing 1', which incloses the escape and preferably is in contact with the outer edge of the way and secured thereto by rivets or similar fastening devices.

It is not necessary to the purpose of this specification to describe the various places, location, and uses where this invention may be applied, as these are obvious .to the user, the device being adapted for location inside or outside the building, and it is obvious may be erected at comparatively small cost. Easy curves maybe employed in the spiral way to prevent the too-rapid descent of the person or article descending, as circumstances may suggest.

It is obvious that changes in the form, proportions, and other minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages'of my invention. 7

Having described the invention, 1 claim- 1. The combination in a fire-escape of the central post, a spirally-twisted bar secured to the said post, and a spirally-bent- Way secured to the said bar, substantially in the manner I 5 and for the purpose specified.

2. A fire-escape comprising a central post, a spirally-twisted bar secured to the post, an inclined spirally-bent way united to said bar and an inclosing casing, substantially as de-- scribed.
