TQ ALL WHOM 1T MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LUM WOODRUFF, of Ann Arbor, in the county of Washtenaw, and State of Michigan, haue invented a new and usefull improvement iny G-ate Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked-thereon. f
It is the object of this improvement to furnish a fastening which shall give support to the gate when closed so that itV cannot sag', which shall be secure against the accidental disturbances of animals, winds, 8Lc.,'and
which admits the gate to swing either way in opening, the devicebeing at th'esame time simple and easily operated by the hand. v l
In ordei-,to e'ect these results I fix rmly in the outer stile of the gate an iron pin, A, from .one to two inches in length and three-quarters of an inch in diameter. The restB and the slotted latch Care so placed with reference vto Lthis pin, that as the gate is closed from either side the pin passes between thetwo pieces rising slightly, (say one-eighth of an inch,) on the rest B, and pressing up the latch C until it Lcomes under the slot a, `when the latch'returns to its place and the gate is securely fastened. The latch Chis lheldin its proper'-v p'osition -by means of the projecting tongue D, Figure 2, which plays readily in the slot E, Figureo. It is further steadied by the rod F which passes through, the vguide Z. To facilitate the -easy opening of thegate, the rod F risesto the level of the top of the gate'and is bent in the-form of a loop, c, large enough to admit the hand. Over this loop and concentricto it is placed' the stationary handle al. By'V grasping the two' loops at once in the hand, the latch-rod F is easily drawn up and the pin released from the latch. The latch returns to its place by its own weight, or if that' is not suticient ahelieal spring maybe added, las shown at e, iig. 2.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is' I I claim the pin A, the rest B, the slotted latch C, and the vertical loopedrod F,- when' arranged s ubstantially in the manner and for the purposes above specified. v
LUM' wooDnUFF.
