' IMPROVEMENT IN NUT.
TO ALL WHOM ITv MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM HARRIS and CLINTON BnowNINe, of Rush Run, Jefferson county, State of` Ohio, have invented a new' and useful Improvement in Nuts; and We d o hereby declare that the following is a full, true, and exact description thereof, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this our specification, and that the same is'suHiciently clear and exact to enable any person skilledin'the art to make and practise our invention.
Theobject of Vour invention is the formation of a fnurt, which shall possess the quality of resistance to uuscrewing" by reason ofthe trembling, shaking, or jarring -to which nuts are subjected under many circumstances oi'rth'eir use, and especially when used upon railroads-or machinery connected therewith.
In Figure l of the drawings we have shown a screw-plate, B, having'aj'screw," c, set'therein, and-upon which, for illustration of our invention, we show our improved nut A applied.
The nut'A we make in the ordinary form and iii Athe usual way, e'xccptthat in the process of its fo'rmati )n a. slot, which Amay be of `dove-tail form, is cut through one of its sides, as indicated in fig. 1, in which slot or groove a stopor brace, D, is inserted, and held in place bydriving down a. portion of the nut with a cold chiselV vagainst it. The groove or recess which receives the stop D can readily be made by the same act of the machinery which punches the nut in case the nut is machine-made, as is now ordinarily the case. The stop Dinay be made in the form represented in blue tint in fig. Land should have a spring temper, one portion ofit being set in the groove ofthe nut, as at e, ilush with `one oi" the sides of the nut, while its curved portion f.exten'ds outwardly therefrom, as represented in said figure. It will thus be seen that when the nut A is rotated in the direction of theA red arrow, the point f of thes'top D will impinge upon the surface or faceg of the plate B,`when the vnut is screwed up; and that as'the point f of the stop D is made to extend below the bottom face of the nut, such impingement will spring the portion j" in they direction of its curve, and thus offer a very great tension resistance to the unscrewing of-the nut when the nut is fully screwed down upon the face g of"the,p1ateB.
In Figure 2 we have shown a wrench vadapted for use with our improved'nut This wrench H is made in usual form, but has an angular slot, as at z', cut in its inner portion of sutiicient capacity to 'receive the springf of the stop or detent D'when applied to the nu't, as shown in' Figure 3, said last-named figure being a plan view of .the nut detached from the screw c.
Figure 4 is an inverted view of`igf3, and by it theaction of the wrench upon the springf inthe act of unscrewing is illustrated; that is to say, suppose the wrench to be applied-tothe nut, as in iig. 4, whilethenut vis screwed up upon the plate B and it is desired to unscrew it. To effect this, the wrench is turned in thedirectionv indicated by the blue arrow, g. 1,whichract will bring the shoulder c of the wrench (52) in contactjwith the rear or convex; portion of the spring f, and thus force its point j" to release its bite uponithe face g of the plate'B in advance of the point of time at which the jaws] Z ot' the wrench firmly gripe the Vsides-of the nut, thus relieving the nut fromttheaction of the spring in the act oi' unscrewing.
