EDWARD B. NELSON, OF CADIZ, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO ROBERT P. SCOTT, OF SAME PLACE.
GARM ENT-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming" part of Letters :Patent No. 615,361, dated December 6, 1898. Application tiled January 31, 18951l Serial No. 668,669. (No model.)
To a/ZZ wiz/0m, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cadiz, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in GarmentfFasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fasteners for ladies dresses, its object being to provide a simple and effective device adapted to serve the combined purposes of a dressskirt fastener and placket-closer and waist and belt retainer.
To the accomplishment of this end my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a vertical sectional view through the waistbands of a dress-skirt and waist, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of same. Fig. 3 is an inner side View showing the meeting ends of a skirt-waistband connected by the fastener. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail perspective views of the fastener members. Fig. 6 is a perspective View of a modified form of hook-plate.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a dress-skirt having the waistband 2, 3 a waist or basque, and 4 a belt such as is ordinarily worn about the waist to conceal the meeting edges of the waist and basque. usual, with a placket-opening 4, which is adapted to be closed when the terminal ends 2a 2b of the waistband 2 are brought together and connected.
Theimproved fastener consists of two members, a retaining-plate 5 and a connectingplate 6, said plates being preferably formed of spring metal slightly bowed or curved to conform to the contour of the waist and provided, respectively, with holes 7 7a for passage of threads, whereby they are secured to the opposite ends of the skirt-waistband 2,
` as clearly shownin Fig. 3.
The skirt is provided, as i l The plate 5 is formed with a series of vertical locking-slots 8 and at its outer end with an integral guideear 9,depending from the upper edge thereof,
said ear having an inwardly-projecting lip 9'for a purpose presently described. The plate 6 is provided at its outer end with an upwardly-projecting outwardly-curved arm lO, having two inturned end hooks 11 and an outturned central hook l2 formed integrally therewith. The plate is also provided with a tongue or hook 13, which is adapted to engage either one of the locking-slots in the retaining-plate 5 to hold the two plates con nected, and with a longitudinal slot 14. When the plates are connected, as shown in Fig. 3, the ear 9 overhangs and extends down on the inner side of plate 6 and its lip 9iL projects into the said slot 14 and serves as a guide and stop to maintain the plates in alinement.
In operation the two fastening-plates are connected by engaging the tongue 13 of the Vplate 6 with one of the slots 8 of the plate 5, according to the size of the waist of the wearer, the plate 6 sliding on plate 5 during this operation and being guided by the ear 9 and its lip 9, which prevent said plate from moving inwardly and upwardly. To the back of the waist, adjacent its lower edge, is attached, by sewing or otherwise, a plate 15, which is then engaged with the hooks 11 and the retaining centralhook or ear 12 fitted over the upper edge of the belt 4. When this is done, it will be seen that the skirt 1 is fastened and supported, the placket-opening 4a held closed, and the lower end of the waist and belt prevented from slipping out of place and leaving the meeting ends or edges of the two garment members exposed.
In Fig. 6 the plate 6 is modiiied in construction by dispensing with hooks 11, which retain the end of the waist in place.
It will be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction of the fastener may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
IOO
. a. guide-ear, and a connecting-plate having a tongue to engage said slots and an upwardlyprojecting arm formed with integral inturned Waist-retaining hooks and an outturned beltretaining hook, and said plates being provided with means for maintaining them in alinement With each other, substantially as described. v
3. A garment-fastener, consisting of a retainingplate provided With locking-slots and a guide-ear having a projecting lip, and a connecting-plate having a longitudinal guideslot to receive said lip, a tongue to engage said locking-slots, and an upwardly-projecting arm formed with integral inturned Waistretaining hooks and an outtu rned belt-retaining hook',y substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
