REED-PLATE FOR TONGUED INSTRUMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,112, dated November 29, 1898.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST PAUL STARK, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Markneukirchen, in the Kingdom of Saxony and Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reed-Plates for Tongued Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved reed-plate and reeds for accordions and other musical instruments, whereby the tone is improved and the reed- -plate and reeds can be economically and rapidly produced. This object is accomplished in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a face view of a blank or unfinished plate. The invention consists in punching plate S so that the reeds Z are formed in one piece integral with the body or main part of the plate. The apertures o are formed by cutting and bending the plate or material lso that at the sides of the openings o are formed small rims or borders Z, Fig. 5, which have been found to be of advantage to the tone and which prevent distortion of the plate S in a lateral direction or in the direction of the rim Z. After the tongues Z have been ground or cut the plate is completed or brought to its finished form by bending the reed-section-A over onto the body or aperture section S.
Obviously modifications are possible. The reed-section A and aperture or main section S could be made separate and connected by rivets, screws, or fastenings, as seen in Fig. 9. The reed-plate in this case could be iiuted or channeled. All such modifications are Within the scope of the invention, which consists in forming plates and reeds from one piece or integral and connecting the integral row of reeds with the aperture-plate, so that the apertures of the latter are bounded or bordered by the bent rims or edge portions. The superposing of the parts, as seen, can be effected by bending or otherwise-as, for example, riveting.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A reed-plate formed integral at one edge with a plurality of separated reed-tongues, and in its body with a plurality of apertures coincident, respectively, with the tongues, the tongued edge of the plate being folded ou a longitudinal line upon the body thereof, with its reed-tongues registering with said apertures, substantially as described.
2. A reed-plate formed integral at one edge with a plurality of separated reed-tongues and having in its body portion a plurality of separated apertures bounded at their edges by laterally-projecting flanges, the tongued edge of the plate being folded on a longitudinal line upon the body thereof, with the reed-tongues presented to the apertures at the side of the plate opposite the laterallyprojecting iian ges, substantially as described.
