Letters Patent No. 79,321, dated June 30, 18.68.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC REEDS EUR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
KNOW ALL MEN :BY THESE lPRESENTS:
That I,.C. CUTTER, of the city and countyof Worcester, and Commonwealth of- Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Metallic Reeds for Musical Instruments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accom pan'ying drawings, forming 4a part of this specification, in which.'- i
Figure I represents, upo'n an enlarged scale, a reed made according to my invention.
Figure 2 represents n longitudinal -central section on line a b, fig. 1; and
Figure represents a' cross-section on linea d, iig. 1, upon a more enlarged'scale.
' To enable -those skilled in the art to `which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to desoribeit more in detail.`
In the drawings, the base, A, of the tongue, B, of the reed has heretofore been fastened directly to the part C er frame ofthe reedfwithont the interposition of any packing-material between the parts thus fastened together. Y A
The reed, when thus made, is apt to give an imperfect sound, owing to the escape or'passage of air between the base, A, of thetongue and the part Cito which it is riveted.
To obviate' this objection, I interpose a rubber or other elastic packing, a, between the base, A, of the tongue if and the part C, the rivet b being passed down through the parts, as fully indicated in the drawings.
Owing to the elasticity of the packing a, the joint will remain tight for a long time, thus rendering the reed very desirable for use in all irst.class'instruments, where perfect, full, and clear sounds are required.
I have found that paper makes a good packing, as a. substitute for rubber. Y Having described my improved reed, what I claim therein as new, andof my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl A metallic reed for musical instruments, in which the tongue of the reed and frame, or part to which the r or other elastic packing, substantially as and for the purposes shown and set forth.
