NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMMET L. PETERSON, OF IVILLAOOOOHEE, GEORGIA.
COVERING FOR COTTON-GIN ROLLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,103, dated November 29, 1898.
Application tiled June 22, 1898. Serial-No. 684,181. (No model.)
T @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMET L. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willacoochee, in the county of Coffee and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coverings for Ootton-Gin Rollers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cotton-gin rollers, and especially to acover for the roller,wl1ere by the seed may be effectually separated from the lint, doing the work in a less time and leaving the lint in a better condition than by the processes commonly in use.
More specifically the present invention resides in the provision of a covering for the roller, which is made up of alternate spirallyarranged strips of leather and elastic material, the leather strip provided with the indispensable groove and serving as a firm body upon which the blade and stripper play and at the same time helping to despatch the lint from the roller at the proper time, while the elastic strip, with its adhesive qualities, forces the cotton to the blade, making the work uniform and regular, which results in a better cleansing of the lint and a greater amount of work in a given time.
My invention will be clearly understood when considered in connection with the drawings Which form a part of this application, and in whichm Figure l is a perspective View of a cottongin roller, showing about its circumference my improved cover made up of alternate spirally-arranged strips of leather and elastic material. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the roller.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings byletter, A designates the roller of the cotton-gin,which has spirally arranged about its entire circumference in alternation leather strips B and elastic strips O, the latter made of any suitable material which may be found best adapted for the purpose, as of rubber. The leather strip is grooved, as seen at D, which grooved portion is provided to allow the mote and trash to escape at the cutting edge of the blade, the strippers ginning it out With the seed. By providing the leather strip arranged as shown and described it prevents the stripper from tearing the elastic strip'when it becomes soft from steady running, as the said elastic strip becomes soft when warm, and in which condition the leather strip prevents the cotton from runnin g around the roller. Where a covering made entirely of elastic material is employed, the covering becomes ruffled by the blade and stripper and causes the cotton to stick to it and run around the roller and tear and break.
By my combining of the leather and elastic strips in the manner described and illustrated` the elastic strip takes the cotton in contact With the leather and with the groove in the leather strip, and it takes the staple quickly through the gin without crimping or cutting or breaking the staple, which renders the product more valuable than the ber produced by the processes commonly in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A gin-roller having a cover made up of alternate strips of leather and elastic material, the leather strip being grooved and the strips arranged spirally about the roller, as setforth.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses. EMMET L. PETERSON.
