SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,981, dated November 29, 1898. Application filed June 15, 1898. Serial No. 683,510- No model-l To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BEAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, Stark county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow Attachments, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention hereinafter described relates to plows of that class in which the plow-beam is laterally adjustable to change the direction of the beam in relation to the plow-point. These beams are ordinarily used with reversible plows.
I have sought in this invention to simplify r 5 the construction and to lessen the weight and cost, at the same time providing an easily-operated and perfectly effective implement.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the pivoted beam and its connections for operating and holding the same, with only so much of the parts as is necessary to illustrate the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a side view of the invention, Fig. 2 a plan View of the same, and Fig. 3 a bottom view.
In the drawings the beam A is pivoted on the plow standard or post, so as to turn laterally thereon. To the rear end of the beam is bolted an arm O, which in the form shown is a plain bar of metal, the lower end of which is bent and bolted to the underside of the beam. The upper end inclines backward to conform to the shape of the plow-handles, the rear end of the plow-beam being fitted against 3 5 it. Between the handles and in part underneath this rear end of the beam is a casting which forms the support for said rear end and limits its movement and also forms a brace for the handles and a ratchet-bar for the pawl of 0 the arm by which the beam is moved. This casting is shown at E. It has ears 2, one on each side, which are fixed to the plow-handles. Across the lower edge and projecting forward is a horizontal baseplate on which the rear end of the beam rests or moves. The beam is held thereto by a bolt 3, which passesthrough a slot ii in the base, the slot being sufficient in width for the total movement of the beam and limiting said movement. A rear plate 6 of the casting E extends upward with the same inclination as the arm C, which moves over it. The upper edge of the plate 6 is toothed and with the teeth engages a spur 6 on a slide f. This slide is fitted to inclose the arm 0 and has on its lower end, underneath, a lip f, which extends under the toothed edge. The spur 6 is midway of the slide underneath the plate C.
On the upper end of the slide is a notched projection 8, in which slides a rod 9, which carries a spring 10, the upper end of the rod being fixed to the arm (J. The spring bears between the shoulder 14 on the under face of the arm 0 and the side of the notched projection, and this is made to hold the spur nor- 6 5 mally in engagement with the toothed plate.
It is disengaged by an ordinary hand-lever 11, acting through a rod 12, connected with the slide.
The upper end of the arm 0 forms the han- 7o dle by which it and the plow-beam are moved.
It extends into convenient position in relation to the handles, so that the beam may be unlocked and moved readily.
The connection of the arm with the plowbeam is direct and rigid and the locking is positive, and the whole effect is accomplished by a single arm, with its locking-spur, and a single casting on the handles fixed independently of the beam.
I claim 1. In combination with a pivoted plowbeam, an arm for adjusting the same fixed to the rear end thereof and extending upwardly therefrom and a casting adapted to be secured 8 5 to the plow-handles, said casting serving as a support for the end of the plow-beam.
2. In combination with a pivoted plowbeam, an arm fixed to its rear end, a casting adapted to be supported between the handles 90 and having a plate on which the beam rests with means for limiting its movement, and having also a rear toothed plate extending upward underneath the arm, and locking mechanism carried on the arm, substantially 5 as described.
