NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
(/HARLES SIDNEY IIOTCHKISS, OF PORT IIURON, MICHIGAN.
ADVERTISING-BOARD SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,953, dated November 29, 1898.
Application filed March 3,1898. Serial No. 672,421. (No model.)
To LZZ whom, t may con/cern.-
Be it known that LCHARLES SIDNEY Horen- KIsS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in advertising and mile boards; and it has for its object to provide a board of the character mentioned, which while being adapted to effectually display advertising matter is also designed to indicate the distance between various points.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an advertising-board embodying in its construction a series of removable panels, whereby the advertisements displayed may be changed When so desired, and, furthermore, the invention aims to provide simple and efficient means for retaining the advertising-panels securely in position.
lVith these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the improvements is better understood, the invention consists, substantially, in the novel construction, combinatiomand arrangement of parts,as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of an advertising and mile board constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the fastening-cleats.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates a base-board, which may be of any desired size, and said base-board is provided at its rear with a downwardly-extending supporting-leg 2, the latter being secured to the board 1 in any suitable manner and designed to enter the ground.
Mounted upon the face of the base-board l is a series of removable advertising-panels 3, the combined area of which is substantially the same as that of said board, and for retaining the panels 3 upon the board 1 aseries of L-shaped metallic fastening-cleats 4 is employed. The cleats 4 are arranged at spaced intervals around the edges of the base-board l and secured thereto in any suitable manner, and said cleats are designed to firmly grip the outer edges of the panels 3, whereby all vertical and lateral movement of the latter is positively prevented; but in order to firmly hold the inner edges of the panels in proper position a locking-bolt 5 is provided, which bolt passes through an aperture G, arranged at a central point in the base-board l. The bolt 5 has an enlarged head 7, and by reason of arranging the aperture G centrally of the board l the panels 3 extend in radial relation to said aperture, the inner corners of said panels thereby lying contiguous to the bolt 5 when the latter is positioned in the aperture 6 and in such relation to the head 7 of said bolt that said head is adapted to bind thereon, a nut 8 being mounted on the threaded end of the bolt 5 and bearing against the rear of the base-board l. It will thus be seen that as the nut 8 is screwed upon the bolt 5 the head 7 of the latter is caused to bind against the inner corners of the panels 3 to such degree as to tightly hold said panels in position.
A mile-board 9 extends along the upper edge of the base-board l, and any suitable matter indicating distances between various points may be placed thereon.
From the foregoing it is apparent that when it is desired to place the panels 3 upon the base-board l said panels are inserted into the fastening-cleats 4, so that their outer edges may be gripped thereby, and when this has been accomplished the bolt 5 is passed through the aperture 6 until its head 7 contacts with the inner corners of said panels. The nut 8 is now applied to the bolt, and as the former is gradually tightened upon the latter the head 7 is caused to bind against the panels to a greater degree until further movement of the nut 8 is prevented, when said panels become securely locked and liability to displacement from the base-board l is obviated. To remove the panels, it is simply necessary to loosen the nut 8, so as to free the head 7 from engagement with the panels, when the latter may be readily withdrawn from the cleats e.
While the construction herein shown and IOO described is what is believed to be a preferable embodimentl of the invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself thereto, as various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to, and the right is therefore reserved to modify or vary the invention as falls within the spirit and scope thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l. A board of the class described, comprising a base-board; a series of fastening-cleats arranged on the edges thereof; a series of removable panels mounted on and entirely covering the face of said base-board and also having their outer edges disposed Within and gripped by said cleats; and a bolt arranged centrally and having an operative contact With each of said panels, for locking the inner central edges of said panels upon the baseboard, substantially as described.
2. A board of the class described, comprising a base-board provided with a centrallydisposed aperture, a series of L-shaped fastening-cleats arranged at intervals around the edges of said board, a series of removable panels mounted upon said board and extending in radial relation to the aperture thereof,
whereby the inner corners of said panels lie contiguous to said aperture, and a bolt disposed in said aperture and provided With an enlarged head, said head binding against the inner corners of the panels to lock the latter upon the base-board, substantially as described.
3. A board of the class described, comprising a base-board provided with a centrallydisposed aperture, a series of L-shaped fastening-cleats arranged at intervals around the edges of said board, a series of removable panels mounted upon said board and extending in radial relation to the aperture thereof, whereby the inner corners of said panels lie contiguous to said aperture, a bolt disposed in said aperture and provided with an enlarged head, said head binding against the inner corners of the panels to lock the latter upon the base-board, and a mile-board extending along the upper edge of the baseboard, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES SIDNEY llOTCllKISS.
