Description

I i. l.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN CASLER, OF CANASTOTA, NEYV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN MUTOSCOPE COMPANY, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
MUTOSCOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,367, dated November' 15, 1898.
Original application filed November 14, 1895, Serial No. 568,884-, Divided and this application filed May 26,1896, Renewed March 2,1898. SerialNo 672,328. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMAN CASLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canastota, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mutoscopes, (Case No. 5,) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the ro. art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in mutoscopes, upon which Letters Patent of the 'United States have already been issued to me under date of November 5, 1895, No. 549,309.
This application (Case No. 5) is a division of my original application, Serial No. 568,884, filed November 14:, 1895.
For purposes of convenience and economy zo I find it desirable in some cases to mount the picture-aards described in my above-mentioned patent radially in the end of a handbracket and to provide simple means for deflecting' said cards,so as to expose the pictures 2 5 to the eyes.
The preferred form of apparatus for embodying this invention is illustrated in the accompanying Sheet of drawings, in which- Figure lis a side view of the apparatus.
0 Fig. 2 is a back view of the same, and Fig. 3
is a perspective View.
Throughout the drawings like referencefigures refer to like parts.
l represents the bracket.
2 2, &c., represent the series of picturecards.
3 is a crank-shaft formed of stiff wire, having the handle 4: and the bail 5 parallel to the shaft 3.
0 The picture-Cards are mounted radiallyin the end of the bracket, their common center being the axis of the shaft 3.
The method of operating my invention is as follows: The operator holds the bracket 1 in one hand and, moving the handle 4:, causes the bail to pass over the upper ends of the picture-Cards, as shown in Fig. 3. This deflects them from the radial line, and as they slip by under the bail the pictures on their faces are successively brought into view.
Various changes might be made in the method of mounting the cards on the bracket and in the construction of the crank-shaft without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention. 5 5
Having therefore described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. A mutoscope which has in combination a hand-bracket, a series of picture-cards 6o mounted in its upper end radially to a horizontal axis, and a crank-arm rotating on the same axis and having a bail secured thereto, which engages the outer ends of the radial picture-cards, substantially as described.
2. In a mutoscope the combination of the hand-bracket, the series of picture-cards mounted in the upper end thereof radially to an axis which is at right angles to the length of the bracket, and means mounted in said 7o bracket for pushing the outer ends of said picture-Cards backward and allowing them to snap forward, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my Signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN CASLER.
