DISPENSING-CASE.l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,000, dated November 8, 1898. Application filed September 3, 1897.. Serial No. 650,506. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN W. HUTOHISON, DELOs H. BUMPUs, and LYMAN BUMPUs, citizens of the United States, residing at Centre View, in the county of Monroe and State of Ohio, have inventedV certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing-Cases; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction in what we term a dispensingcase for stores, the object being to provide a case containing several compartments and means for bringing any one of the same above the scoop of a scale for the purpose of delivering thereto the goods contained in any of the compartments.
The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter described and speciically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a dispensing-case constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a latch-bolt employed in connection with the improved device. Fig. 4L is a detail view of a plate secured to the. bottom of the rotatable case. Fig. 5 is a detail view, on an enlarged scale, of the lower portion of one of the spouts of the case, showing the valve and the mechanism for operating the same, said valve being illustrated in two positions by full and dotted lines.
Referring now to said drawings7 1 indicates the base of said dispensing-case, which is provided atone end with the scales 2 and at its other end with the stand 3, having an upright post 4from the upper end of which'extends a shaft 5. Upon the upper end of the post 4: is an annular groove 6, adapted to receive antifriction-balls 7, upon which the rotatable case 8 rests. The said rotatable case 8 is provided with a central opening 9 to receive the upright shaft 5, and around said opening, upon the lower face of the bottom piece, is a plate 10, adapted to rest upon said antifriction-balls 7 and also provided with a plurality of notches 11, corresponding in number to the number of compartments in vsaid case and which are adapted to receive the upper end of a spring-latch 12, that is carried at the upper end of the post in the usual manner. The upper end of the springlatch is beveled on both sides, so that the revoluble case can be easily turned, but which also serves to retain the case in the desired position against free rotation when situated within one of said notches 11. The case 8 comprises the top and bottoni pieces and a plurality of upright partitions 13, preferably radially arranged, while between the outer ends of the partitions are plates of glass 14, forming the outer walls lof these compartments. In the upper end of each compartment is an opening l5, that is closed by a removable cover 16, and in the lower end of each compartment is an Opening 17, from which depends a spout 18. The lower ends of these spouts are situated so that they pass over the inner pan of the scale, and each spout is provided with a valve 19, that is connected with and controlled by an operatingrod 20, having a finger-piece 21. The operating-rod passes through a barrel 22, in which is situated a spring 23, that serves to draw said rod downwardly, and through the intermediacy of a lilik 26, connected with the inwardly-bent end 27 of said rod 20 and with a valve, the said valve can be Operated in an obvious manner. On the outer side of the spout 18 is a stationary finger-piece, so that the valves can be operated by two lingers, between which the two finger pieces are grasped. The valves 19 are pivotally mounted in the barrels or depending spouts 18, and to one side of each valve a vertical member of an operating-rod is attached, and at the elbow formed between the said vertical member of the operating-rod and the bent portion 27 thereof the pivotal connection is applied. As shown in Fig. 1, two operating-rods 26 are shown together; but one is for another outlet, which is in rear of that illustrated in section, and the remaining parts cannot be clearly understood in connection therewith in view of the position of the similar parts in the foreground. g
In operation, the finger-piece 2l is engaged IOO by one finger of the hand, while another lin ger of the hand is rested on the finger-piece above on the side of the spout, and by drawing upwardly on the rod 20 against the action of the spring 23 the valve 19 is opened to allow the material in the spout to pass out, the quantity of said material coming from said spout being regulated by the position of the valve, which can be controlled very easily by operatin g the rod 20.
The case is held in place by means of a block 29, fastened to the upper end of the shaft 5 and having a downwardly facing shoulderto prevent the case from rising. XVe have shown one of said compartments as provided with a spiral stem 30, extending downward through the same and into the upper end of the spout 18. This spiral stern is rotatable and is connected with the rotatable handle or finger-piece 3l on the outside of the cover 1G. This stem can be used to cause goods that do not easily liow to pass into the spoutand to force the saine outwardly through the lower end thereof.
As before stated, the scales are situated below the case, and one of the pans of said scales is situated so that it will be directly below the lower end of the spout, so as to receive the goods flowing from said lower end.
The scale may be of any conventional construction. We have illustrated in connection with our dispensing apparatus a scale adapted to be thrown into and out of operative position, the same consisting of a scale-beam 32, carrying at its opposite ends guide-rods 33, adapted to lit in tubular or hollow guides 34:. The beam is balanced in a vertical adjustable support 35, said support being fitted in suitable guides and provided with a central depending arm or projection having a notch therein to fit over and to be engaged by an eccentric 36, through the medium of which it may be raised, as shown in Fig. l, into position so that the beam may vibrate, or by reason of turning the cam through the medium of its handle the beam may be'lowered so as to rest upon the upper end of the guide-tubes 34, in which position it will be out of operation.
Having thus described our invention, what 5o we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A dispensing-case comprising an upright rotatable casing having a plurality of conipartments, a depending valved spout at the lower end of each of said compartments, an opening at the upper end of each of said compartments, a removable cover for said opening, and a rotatable spiral stem connected with a rotatable handle attached to said cover and extending downwardly through the compartment and into the spout at the lower end thereof.
2. A dispensing-case comprising an upright post provided at its lower end with an annular groove, an upright shaft rising from said post, a casing having a central upright aperture to receive said shaft, a spring-latch carried by said post, a plate upon the lower end of said casing which is provided with a plurality of notches to receive the said latch, a plurality of compartments in said casing having removable covers for closing the openings in the upper ends thereof, valved spouts leading from the lower end of said casing, a head secured to the upper end of said shaft and provided with a downwardly-facing shoulder to hold said casing in place, and antifriction-balls situated within said annular groove of the post and upon which the said plate rests.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
