STEP FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,534, dated November 1, 1898.
Application filed July 9, 1898- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY C. SWAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oshkosh, Winnebago county, Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steps for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification in such full, clear, and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art to which it appertains to make, construct, and use the same.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail one mechanical form embodying the invention, such detailed construction being but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings, Figure I represents a plan view of my improved vehiclestep, which is broken away in part in order to more clearly disclose-the construction; and Fig. II, an enlarged detailed view of the joint between the frame and the step-plate.
The forked frame A is provided with a clip a, by which the step may be attached to the vehicle. Each arm of the forked frame is enlarged at its end, forming a flat surface a circular in outline and having a projection a upon its face and a recess a diametrically opposite said projection. Corresponding flat surfaces 19 are formed upon the side edges of step-plate B and have a projection b and a recess 12 upon their faces, corresponding to and engaging the recess and projection of the opposed fiat surface of the forked frame.
Bores a and d are respectively formed through the centers of the flattened portions of the frame and of the step-plate, and a bolt 0 is inserted through said bores, which suitably secures the opposing surfaces together.
To place the step-plate in position, the arms of the forked frame are sprung sufliciently apart to permit the projection on each part to engage the corresponding recess in the opposite part, when they will close together and hold said parts engaged.
By means of the construction herein disclosed the step-plate can be quickly and rigidly attached to the forked frame and the step-plate eifectually prevented from turning when the step is used. Heretofore steps have $erial No. 685,492. (No model.)
greater simplicity and strength. The parts can be quickly assembled, and I am also enabled to make a neat and finished joint between the arms of the frame and the sides of the step-plate. The rivets or bolts are provided in my device principally for the pur= pose of preventing the arms of the forked frame from spreading, and the strain upon the step when used is principally exerted upon the integral projections of the forked frame and step-plate. If a step-plate is broken or is defective, it can be removed by springing the arms of the frame apart, and a new step-plate can be insertedwithout removing the frame. The step-plate is the part most frequently broken, and the expense of replacing the frame whenever a new step-plate is required is avoided by this construction. Different forms or styles of step-plate can be readily and quickly substituted whenever desirable.
What I claim is 1. A vehicle-step consisting of a forked frame and a step-plate, one of said parts being provided with a recess, and the other of said parts having a projection said forked frame having sufficient resiliency to adapt it to be sprung upon said step-plate to engage theprojection and recess, substantially as set forth.
2. A vehicle-step consisting ofa forked frame and a step-plate, each having an engaging portion, said portions being provided with integral interlocking parts the frame having sufficient resiliency to adapt it to be sprung upon said step-plate to engage said parts, substantially as set forth.
3. A vehicle-step consisting of a forked frame and a step-plate, the engaging portions tion, in the presence of two Witnesses, this 29th day of June, 1898.
