SPECIFIGATION formng part of Letters Pate't No. 613,483, dated November 1, 1898. Application filed J'fie 14, 1898. Serial No. 683 ,422. (No model.)

Be it known that I, J ACOB M. WooDLING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mount J ewett, in the county of Mc- Kean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tanners Beams, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in tanners tools, and particularly to that class known as beams, for fleshing, unhairing, and dressing skins, the Object of the invention being to produce such a beam formed of iron, steel, brass, copper, or any `other metal that will withstand the attack of the tools employed in treatment of skins. Where wooden beams are employed, it has been found that the surface speedily becomes cut and even necessitat-ing frequent change to insure satisfactory action.
It is the Object of this invention, therefore, to produce a metallic beam the surface of which will be uniform at all times.
Furthermore, the Object of the invention is to produce such a beam which will be suffciently rigid to sustain the weight and pressure incident to its use, yet making it light and easily handled by the operator,
A further Object of the invention is the provision of novel means whereby the marking of skins is obviated. Furthermore, I contemplate the production of a beam which will possess advantages in points of simplicity, efciency, and durability, making it at the same time inexpensive.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference Will be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters of reference denote correspondingparts in the several Views,in which- Figure 1 is a face view of my improved tanners beam. Fig. 2 is a plan view looking at the under side thereof; and' Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.
In the drawings, a denotes the body of the beam proper, consisting of a metallic plate curved in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 3, and the degree of curve may be Varied to suit the individual opinions of the users or manufacturers. On the under side' of the plate I provide braces 2, consisting of metallic strips having their ends bent at approximately right angles With relation to the strip proper, 'and the ends so bent are secured to the under surface of the body by means ofbolts 4, the heads of which are countersunk into and flush with the upper surface of the body. Nuts 5 are run on the bolts and retain the braces in place. As will be apparent, these braces will prevent the body from sagging or collapsing when the hide is supported thereon and will, furthermore, sustain the pressure of the operator.
On the under side of the beam, at the edge thereof, on one end, I provide awooden rim 6, by the use of which marking of the hide is prevented. This rim may be secured in place in any convenient manner; but in practice I prefer to employ rivets, although I may provide screw-holes extending part way into the under surface, whereby the said rim may be removably attached. p
Itwill be understood in view of the foregoing that various changes may be made in So the proportions and other details of construction without departing from the spirit of. the invention.
Having now fully described my device,-what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tannefs beam consisting of a curved metallic plate, braces having their ends bent at approximately right angles and secured to the under side of the plate, and a rim removably go attached at the edge of the beam, as and for the purpose described.
