WILLIAM (LERION, OF ALTA VISTA, IOWA.
CLAMP FOR TRlNlNllNG LAMP-WICKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. $13,130, dated October 25, 1898.
Application filed March 19,1898. Serial No. 674,515. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. ERION, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Alta Vista, in the county of Chickasaw and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Trimming Lamp-Vicks; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to wick-clamps for trimming coal-oil andother lamps; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same by which the wick may be clamped at the proper point and be evenly trimmed by a pair of shears or scissors.
The invention consists, essentially, in an open rectangular frame the side bars of which are formed with slots and said frame provided with a stationary clamp, a movable frame comprising side bars passing through the end of said frame and provided with an inner end bar carrying a movable clamp having pins or projections engaging with said slots, a screw-threaded socket in one end of said frame, an outer end bar, and a screw-bolt passing through a socket in said outer end bar and provided with a crank, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a lamp-burner, showing my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improvement detached. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the same.
In the said drawings the referencenumeral 1 designates a lamp-burner of any ordinary or suitable construction, the numeral 2 designating the wick-tube thereof, and 3 the dome.
The numeral f1 designates the clamping device, comprising the open rectangular frame consisting of the side bars 5, formed with 1ongitudinal slots G, and the end connecting bars 7, one of which is provided with a hole or opening, in which is seated a screw-threaded socket S, and the other provided with a ixed clamp 9.
The numeral 10 designatesa movable frame consisting of side bars 11, passing through holes in the end bar 7, provided with the socket, the inner end bar 12, secured to said side bars 1l and carrying al movable clamp 13, and the outer end bar 11. This clamp 13 is provided with outwardly-extending pins or proj ect-ions 15, which engage with the slots G in the side bar 5.
The numeral 16 designates a socket, through which andv the socket S passes a screw-bolt 17 providedwith a crank 1S.
The operation is as follows: Vhen itis desired to trim the wickof a lamp, the dome of the burner is turned back, as seen in Fig. 1, and the wick raised. The device is then applied to the burner, the Wick passing between the clamps. moving the movable frame and clamp inward,so that the wick will be securely clamped between the clamps. The wick can then be evenly trimmed by a pair of shears or scissors, after which the device is removed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is In a wick-clamping device, the combination with the open rectangular frame formed with slots in the sides, the screwthreaded socket and the fixed clamp, of the movable frame, the movable clamp having pins passing through said slots, the socket at one end of said movable frame, and the screw-bolt passing therethrough and through the screwthreaded socket in said open frame, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VILLIAM O. ERION.
Witnesses:
A. T. GossMAN, J. R. SNYDER.
The screwfbolt is then turned,
