SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,692, dated October 18, 1898. Application filed May 20, 1897. SerialNo. 637,400. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern: Y
Be it known that we, MAGGIE ELIZA ZUR- BRIGG and GILGAIN A. ZURBRIGG, of Rose Lawn, in the county of Shawano and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in `Vheel-I-Iolders 5 and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in devices for 'use by wheelwrights and which are adapted to lift the wheel from the floor and support it while being painted or while a tire is beingiitted thereto, the object being to provide a device of this character which shall be simple in construction, easy of operation, and which is not easily gotten out of order.
The invention comprises certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts whereby it is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapted for the purposes for which it is intended, as will be hereinafter fullydescribed, and specifically defined in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our invention, showing the parts in position ready to lift and receive a wheel. Fig. 2 is a vertical central longitudinal section thereof, showing the parts in the position they will assume after the wheel has been raised. Fig. 3 is a vertical central transverse section, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view onthe line x m of Fig. 3.

l represents a suitable framework comprising a base 2, having uprights 3 located at each side thereof and provided with openings L1, which are adapted to receive trunnions 5, which form the pivots upon which the supporting-carrier G is held. This carrier 6 is preferably cylindrical in form, its upperend being provided with a cavity 7 and a threaded rod 8, the former intended to receive the hub of the wheel and the latter to receive a nut 9, which serves to retain the wheel upon the carrier, as clearly shown, and the lower,
end of the carrier is provided with a crosswhich receives the body of the carrier 6 and supports it in its horizontal position or while the wheel is being placed thereon.
To the outside of one of the trunnions which support the carrier 6 is attached a plate 12, having a plurality of teeth located upon the lower circ ular edge thereof, which are adapted to engage with a spring-pawl 13, pivotally secured. to the uprights 3, and the upper end of this plate extends beyond the upper extremity of the uprights, Where it engages with the carrier 6 through the medium of a threaded rod 14, which receives upon its end a suitable nut 15. The end of the trunnion is also threaded to receivea similar nut 16, which serves to retain the plate in place thereon.
The teeth upon the plate 12 and their engagement with the spring-pawl serve to lock the carrier 6 in an inclined position, as shown in dotted lines, so that the mechanic may adjust the parts to bring the wheel into a comV venient position to work upon.
It will thus be seen that our invention provides in a simple and inexpensive manner a `device which will minimize the labor in lifting or otherwise handling a wheel and which is so arranged that the parts are not liable to get out of order.
\ Modifications may be made without departing from the essential features ofour invention, and we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise details of construction herein shown and described, but reserve the right to make such changes and alterations therein as may fairly fall within its spirit and scope.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
y A device for the purposes described, comd IOO prising a, base having uprights arranged thereon, a carrier pivotally secured to the said uprights, said carrier being provided With a cross-piece adapted to engage the edge of the 5 uprights, a spring-catch adapted to engage said cross-piece and look the carrier in a vertical position, a toothed plate secured to one of the trunnons of the carrier, a spring-pawl pivotally secured to the uprights and adapted lo to engage the teeth on said plate, a threaded rod adapted to receive the hub of the Wheel, and a loekingnut engaging said rod, and
adapted to secure the wheel in place, substantially as described.
