SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,398, dated October 18, 1898.

Be it known that I, EDWIN CAEvER,a citi' zen of the United States, residing at Florence, in the county of Switzerland and State of. Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n 'lnrust-liearlngs; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
My invention has relation to improvements in thrust-bearings and means for lubricating the same; and the object is to provide a bearing for the end of a shaft which will resist the thrust of the shaft and at the same time will supply the requisite lubricant thereto, as hereinafter will be morevfully described and the novelty thereof be particularly pointed out in the claims.
I have fully and clearly illustrated the invention in the accompanying drawings ,where- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section through the bearing-box, showing the shaft arranged therein and my improved thrust bearing applied. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the bearing-box on line :20 a: of Fig. 1, showing the thrust-bearing in face view, the course of the lubricating-duct being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the thrust-bearing, showing the lubricating-duct therein.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a strong two-part metal box-bearing formed with a journal-seat 1, adapted to receive and hold the end portion of a shaft, and having a strong upwardly-projecting end piece 2 to resist the pressure of the thrust to which the shaft may be subjected, and through the end piece 2, centrally therein, is let a strong adjusting-screw 3, provided with a handpiece 4, by which'the screw may be turned and adj usted. On the lower section or part of the bearing-box is fitted a strong cap 5, the inner end of which fits against the end piece 2 of the lower section and is formed with a central open-end slot or recess 6, in which fits the neck or projection on the thrustbearing.
The cap 5 of the bearing-box is secured in place to the lower part by means of any proper fastenings, as by the usual bolts, as shown.
B designates my improved thrust-bearing composed of a substantial disk of suitable metal formed with a vertically-projecting neck-piece 7, adapted to set within the recess or slot 6 in the cap of the bearing-box to hold the disk against movement and position by the action of the shaft. In the thrustbearing B is formed a lubricating-duct 8, leading through the neck-piece 7 and opening at the center of the disk,.as shown in Fig.
3 of the drawings, and suitably mounted on the neck-piece 7 in connection with the lubricating-duct 8 may be an oil-cup 9, by which the lubricant is supplied in a well-known manner.
It will readily be perceived that my improved thrust-bearing is applicable to horizontally-disposed shafts having an end thrust, and also to vertically-arranged shafts, in the latter instance the lubricating-cup being arranged in vertical position to convey the lubricant to the shaft.
My invention is particularly applicable to the shafts in vertical corn-mills, crushers, &c., wherein the shafts have an end-thrust pressure.
Having thus described'my inventiomwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A thrust-bearing for shafts comprising a bearing-box composed of two separable sections, the lower part or half being formed with a vertical end piece to resist the thrust of a shaft and the cap of the box being formed with an open-end slot or recess, and a thrustbearing disk in the end of the box, formed with a neck-piece adapted to fit in the recess of the cap to prevent the disk from turning, and an oil-duct leading through the said neckpiece into the disk and opening centrally therefrom substantially as specified.
2.
