UNITED STATES` PATENT OFFICE.
SCOTT EMERY LEECH AND GEORGE ASLETT, OF MANNINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
CASING OR TUB ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612,356, dated October 11, 1898.
Application led April 7, 1898. Serial No. 676,783. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that we, SCOTT EMERY LEECH and GEORGE ASLETT, of Mannington, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Casing or Tube'Elevatoi-s, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improvement in elevating devices for use in lifting casings or tubing such as used in wells, and particularly in the parts which connect with the tubing or casing.
The invention has for an object to make the links by which the casing is suspended in elevating the same readily detachable, so in case one or both of such links should break they can be readily removed and another inserted in a few moments, saving the expense and loss of time required to return the device to the factory or shop for repairs. Y
To this end the invention consists in the novelconstructionsand combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the improved elevator as in use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the several parts detached. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of the elevator, and Fig. 4 is a detail section of 1one of the keeper-blocks and its securingbo t.
In the construction shown the body of the elevator comprises the jaw-like sections A and B, which are hinged together at C and are adapted to embrace the casing or tubing D. The sections A and B have at their ends lugs or anges A'v A2 B' B2, which lap together, the hinge C connecting the lugs A and B', and the opposite lugs A2 and B2 being held together by one of the -links presently described When adj usted to position for use in the manner hereinafter specified.
The links E are alike and are connected to,
one of the lugs of each pair A' B and A2 B2 and may be turned up to embrace the lapped lugs, and so lock the sections A and B in closed position, or may be lowered to permit the sections to be opened. The upward strain on the links in lifting operates to strain the same in position to hold the sections A and B closed upon the casing.
In pivoting the links to the lugs with which they connect we provide the latter with notches or seats F for the links and supply keeper-blocks G, by which the links are held in` said seats, and means for securing the blocks to their respective lugs. The seats F are shown as half-round notches in the lower edges of the lugs, which latter are recessed to receive the blocks G, which are also formed with half-round notches fitting the cross-bar of the link. These blocks are held to their lugs by the bolts H, whose heads H are countersunk in depressions G and may be operated by a socket-Wrench, so when all the parts are adjusted for use there are no projecting bolt heads and the surface of the keeper-blocks is smooth.
By making the links detachable they can be readily replaced When broken or otherwise defective, and the special device shown and described for securing the links is stronger, durable, easily operated, and leaves the elevator free of projections and smooth, as desired. i
Having lthus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an elevator substantially as described, the combination with the sections jointed together and arranged Vto embrace the casing and having formed in their under sides recessesand notches within said recesses, and
vthe links received in said notches, of keeperblocks arranged to it in said recesses and provided on one face and at each end thereof with bolts by which they are secured to said jointed sections, the said keeper-blocks being formed between the bolts with notches, said latter notches coinciding with the notches in the sections to receive the cross-bars of the links, as and for the purpose set forth.
SCOTT EMERY LEECI-I. GEORGE ASLETT.
