Description

NrTED STATES 'PATENT ramon.
THOMAS SHAMBAUGII AND JAMES` MCOONNELL, OF ARLINGTON, IOIVA.
PIPE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 612061, dated october '11, 1898.
' Application tied october 29,1897. straling. 656,829. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom t muy concern: j
Be it known that we, THOMAS SHAMBAUGH and JAMES R. MCOONNELL, residing at Arlingj ton, in the county of Fayette and Stateof Iowa, have invented a new and useful Pipe-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe-holders and the object of the same is to provide a holder which will receive pipes of different diameters, the device being simple in construction and effective in operation.
Another object is to provide a brake for the movable jaw which also serves to hold said jaw centrally in the opening in which it is pivoted, so that it does not bind at its edges.
Vith the above objects in view7 the invention consists of a block having an opening therein to receive the pipe, a pivoted latch closing said opening, a movable jaw pivoted in said block, a removable stationary jaw, and a brake for the movable jaw.
The invention further consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and afterward specically pointed out in the claims.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention most nearly appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, having reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification in which- Figure l is a perspective view of our invention secured upon a base-block and holding a section of pipe. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the holder removedfrom the supportingbase. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of Fig. l.
Like letters of reference mark the saine parts Wherever they occur in the various iigures of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A' indicates the Vsupporting-base, provided with an opening through which the pipe may be inserted and having the block B secured thereto by bolts C. Block B has a longitudinal opening D formed therein, in line with a similar opening formed in the supportingbase A, and an entrance-opening E, communicating with opening D through one of the side walls thereof.
A latch-bar F is pivotally secured to the block B by bolt G, said bolt passing through the walls of opening D and having its opposite end projecting from said block and provided with an annular groove I-I. A latch-bar is adapted to rest upon base A and close the entrance to opening D of the block, so that when the pipe is inserted therein it cannot become displaced by lateral movement.
Intermediately'secured upon bolt G, within the opening D, is a movable jaw II, having the serrated cam-surface I, which is adapted to engage the pipe and clamp the same rmly against the stationary jaw J. This stationary jaw J consists of a fiat piece of metal having its inner biting edge V-shaped and removably secured in a cavity formed in the upper surface of block B by the screw-bolts K. Thus the stationary jaw may be removed at any time for the purpose of sharpening the biting edge thereof.
Secured to the upper surface of block B is a plate L, which is cut out to permit the moveinent therein of the movable jaw, said plate projecting over the` opening D at the rear of the pivoted jaw to form a stop, against which the rear end of said jaw abuts to limit the downward movement of the latter. Plate L also projects over the rear edge of blockD to form a flange, which is provided with the perforations M to receive the bent end M' of the brake N. This brake N is a springrod, which has one end bent, as before stated, to engage `the perforations of plate L, and at its opposite end is bent to form a handle O, by means of which it may be disengaged from the groove II of bolt G, which it engages. By the use of this brake the removable jaw is retained in any desired position, and also the bolt is so held that said jaw will be positioned centrally in opening D and prevented from binding at its edges as it moves therein.
In operation the latch is raised and the pipe inserted in the block, where it is engaged and held by the movable jaw acting in conjunction with the biting edge of the Xed jaw.
From the above description it will be seen that we have provided a pipediolder which IOO will securely hold the pipe, the raising and lowering being effected by disengaging the movable jaw therefrom, the device being extremely simple in construction and effective in operation.
While We have illustrated and described the best means noW known to us for carrying out our invention, We do not wish to be understood as restricting ourselves to the exact details lof construction shown and described, but hold that any slight changes or variations such as might suggest themselves to the ordinary mechanic Will properly fall Within the limit and scope of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. In a pipe-holder the combination of the base provided with an opening to receive the pipe, a block mounted on said base having a pipe-receiving opening therein, a movable jaW formed with a cam-gripping surface, a pivotal bolt for said jaw, said bolt passing through the block and having one end projecting therethrough in which is formed an annular groove, a spring brake-rod attached at one end to the block. and adapted to engage the groove of the pivotal bolt, and a fixed jaw, substantially as set forth.
2. In a pipe-holder the combination of a block having a pipe-receiving opening therein, a iiXed jaw located in one Wall of said opening, a longitudinal recess on the opposite side of said opening, a movable jaw havinga cam-gripping surface pivoted in said recess, a iianged plate extending from one end of said recess for limiting the movement of the said pivotal jaW, and a spring brake-rod adapted to bear on the shaft of the said pivotal jaw, substantially as set forth.
THOS. SHAMBAUGH. J. R. MCCONNELL.
