WHIFFLETREE CONNECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,735, dated October 4, 1898.
Application filed March 7, 1898. Serial No. 672,982. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H oN, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Ste. Anne du Sault, in the county of Arthabaska, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVhiffletree Connections, (for which I have obtained Canadian Patent No. 57,272, dated September 1, 1897;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in whiffletree connections.
The object of my invention is to provide av device of this character in whichthe whiffletree is yieldingly connected to the shafts or to the doubletree in order that sudden shocks,
A designates a portion of the shafts of a vehicle provided with a suitable bearing a, within which is located a removable pin a.
B designates a whiflietree, to the under side of which is secured a plate I) by means of suitable screws or bolts 17 Formed on the said plate I) are a series of cylinders 6 having their forward ends closed, said cylinders be ing adapted to receive similar cylinders b having their rear ends closed, the two series of cylinders being adapted to telescope, as shown in Fig. 3. Mounted within said cylinders and having a reciprocatory movement therein is rod b having its central portion curved, as at b, the ends of which pass into the cylinders b through suitable openings formed in the closed ends, thefree ends of the rod being provided 'with suitable adjusting-nuts 72 a removable plate 19 being placed on each end of the rod inside of the adjusting-nuts. A suitable buffer b formed of suitable material, such as a spring or a rubber cushion, is interposed between the plates b and the closed end of the cylinders b thereby forming a yielding buffer against which any sudden shocks, as in the starting of the horses, &c., will be automatically taken up, eliminating the strain placed on the connections as formed at the present time.
While I have shown the device as applied to a pair of shafts, it will be obvious that I may use the same construction to connect the whiffletree with the doubletree of a wagonpole, as desired.
Inasmuch as it is desirable that the tension of the buffer used may be regulated according to the vehicle with which it is to be used I have provided the adj listing-nuts b and to have ready access thereto, yet retaining the buffer within a closed chamber, preventing the entry of dust, &c., I provide the telescoping cylinders b I). In addition to this the telescoping chamber provides an easy method of disconnecting and removing the parts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. A whiffletree connection, comprising a plate mounted on the under side of the whiffletree; a series of telescoping cylinders connected to said plate; a rod, having its free endsyieldingly mounted in said cylinders; and means for connecting said rod to the pole or shafts of a vehicle.
2.' A whiflletree connection, comprising a plate mounted on the under side of the whiffletree; a'series of telescoping cylinders connected to said plate; a rod having its free ends mounted to have reciprocatory movement in said cylinders; a' yielding buffer mounted on said rod; means for regulating the tension of said buffer; and means for connecting said rod to the pole or shafts of a vehicle.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE HEON.
