MILK-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,361, dated September 27, 1898.
Application filed March 28, 1898.
To afZZ whom t 11m/y concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES F. FOSTER and ANTHONY FERRER, citizens of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Milk-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of milk-cans in which the joint between the body and the breast is reinforced by a hoop or band4 for protecting the joint against blows from adjacent cans in transit.
The object of our invention is the provision of an effective reinforcing-band which is reliably held against displacement on the can and which at the same time forms a guard below the reinforced joint, so as to protect the can-body not only at the joint, but for some distance below the same, to enable the can to withstand blows from comparatively low cans whose shoulders are below the level of its own reinforcing-band.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the upper portion of a milk-can embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof in line 2 2, Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in both figures.
A is the cylindrical body of the can, B the breast, and O the usual flaring mouth. The cylindrical rim or flange b at the lower end of the breast surrounds the upper end of the can-body and is provided with an annular shoulder or offset d, which rests upon the upper end of the body, so as to form a flush internal joint at this point.
The reinforcing-band preferablyconsists of a pair of sheet-metal hoops or rings E E', arranged one within the other and secured together by rivets c or any other suitable fastening. 'The inner ring E is interposed between the upper portion of the can-'body and the flange of the breast, and its upper edge abutsagainst the shoulder d of thebreast, while its lower portion extends some distance below the rim of the breast. The outer ring E' of the reinforcing-band bears with its lower portion against the inner ring E, while its upper portion is offset outwardly and bears against the outer side of the breast-ange, the shoulder or offset c' of the outerring abutting semi No. 675,356, oro model.)
and outer sides by the two rings of the band, Y
and also held against vertical displacement on the can-body between the upper end of the latter and. the lip c? of the outer ring E', thus strongly binding the breast and body together.
The two rings of the rreinforcing-band, together with the interposed breast-rim, form three thicknesses of metal, which amply stiffen and protect the joint at the shoulder of the can against blows from adjacent cans. The portions of the rings E E which extend below the breast-rim form a guard which protects this portion of the can-body against blows from low cans whose protecting bands or shoulders are liable to strike the can below its reinforced shoulder, enabling our improved cans yto be shipped in the same car with such low cans without danger of injuring the joint between the breast and the canbody. i
XVe claim as our invention l. The combination with the can-body, of the breast having at its lower end a rim or flange which surrounds the upperportion of the can-body and a reinforcing-band composed of an inner ring or hoop interposed between the upper portion of the can-body and the breast-flange and extending below the flange, an outer ring or hoop secured to the inner ring and having an offset upper portion which bearsA against the outer side of j the breast-flange and is provided at its upper edge with an inwardly-turned lip which overlaps the shoulder of the breast, substantially as set forth. 2. The combination with the breast provided at its lower end with a depending rim IOO or flange and at its junction with the flange against the outer side 0f the breast-flange and with a shoulder or offset, of the Can-body arprovided With a lip which overlaps the shoulranged Within the breast-flange and abutting der of the breast, substantially as set forth. at its upper end against the shoulder thereof, Witness our hands this 22d day of March, I 5 and a reinforcing-band composed of an inner 1898.
ringinterposed between the ean-body and the 1 f 1 breast-flan ge, extending below said flange and abutting at its upper edge against the shoull der of the breast and an outer ring secured 1o to the inner ring below the breast-flange and having its upper portion offset and bearing Witnesses:
