CAROLINE LOUIS, OF PINE CITY, MINNESOTA.
WASHBOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 611,177, dated September 20, 1898.
Application filed May 10, 1897- Serial No. 635,809- (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, CAROLINE 'LoU1s, of Pine City, in the county of Pine and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to washboilers; and it consists, essentially, of a boiler proper provided with a removable cage and a drain lid or cover with which the said cage is adapted to be used.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple attachment to a washboiler to facilitate the removal and draining of the clothes without scalding or burning the hands.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional perspective view of a boiler emthe numeral 1 designates a washboiler, which in this instance is preferably circular in form and constructed of galvanized iron and copper and having at opposite sides grooves or handles 2. At the upper end of the boiler an extended flange 3 surrounds the same to support a lid or cover 4, the said lid or cover being used to close the top of the boiler and is adapted to be inverted, as shown in Fig. 3, and arranged at an incline to provide a draining-surface, the flange 3 in this instance acting as a support for the said lid or cover.
The said lid or cover is to be constructed of suitable galvanized iron or analogous mate rial and has adjacent to one side thereof and extending almost entirely across the same a strip 5, with openings 6 therein. Within the boiler is removablymounted a galvanizediron wire cage 7, having a bail or handle 8, by which it can be lifted from or placed in the boiler. This cage is of the same contour as the boiler and of such dimension as to be readily taken from or placed therein, the&
bail or handle being closed down at one side when the said cage is within the boiler. The clothes which are within the cage are simultaneously withdrawn from the hot water, and the lid or cover is inverted and placed on the top of the boiler at a slight incline, as shown in Fig. 3. The cage is then placed on the lid or cover as thus arranged, with the edge thereof bearing against the strip 5, and thereby the water is permitted to drain from the clothes contained in the cage and flow back from the lid or cover and through the openings 6 in the strip into the boiler. It will be under stood that the saidlid or cover is to be provided with a suitable handle, whereby it may be readily taken from orplaced on the boiler.
The device as heretofore set forth dispenses with the use of a clothes-stick or mangle and facilitates the operation of removing clothes from or placing them in a boiler without injury to the person manipulating the several devices.
It is obviously apparent that many minor changes in the details of construction might be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is The combination of a washboiler having an extended top flange arranged in a horizontal plane, an imperforate lid or cover for said boiler having on the lower side thereof a strip on one side of the center and provided with a series of openings extending there through, the said lid or cover being adapted to be inverted and arranged at an angle of inclination on the flange of the boiler, said strip being located far enough inward from the periphery of the cover to permit the latter to be placed onthe boiler, and a cage having a bail, and removably mounted within the boiler, said cage being adapted to be placed on theinverted cover and rested against the strip for draining purposes, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CAROLINE LOUIS.
Witnesses:
