To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. SNYDEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Gibson, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletree Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.

My invention relates to improvements in whiftletree attachments; and the object is to provide an improved shield or plate connected to the outer end of the whiffletree to prevent abrasion or other injury to trees and shrubbery and obviate the injurious eects of the harness by contact with the strands of wire fences during the passage of the horse or team while plowing adjacent to the fence or around the objects mentioned.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as Will be hereinafter fully described,and as particularly pointed out in the claims.

I have fully and clearly illustrated the invention in the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and wherein- Figure l is a plan view of a whiffletree having my improved shield, guard, or plate connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail central section through the parts, taken on the line no of Fig. 3, showing the pivotal connection of the shield to the Whifletree. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the shield detached from the whiffletree.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a whiffletree of the usual make or construction, having a central clip and ring l to connectit to a clevis of a doubletree or other thing or implement to be dragged or drawn, as a plow, cultivator, or harroW, and having ferrules and hooks 2 on the ends, as usual, to connect the traces or tugs thereto. In the outer ferrule are secured upper and lower plates 3 4, fastened by any proper and suitable means, and in the projecting ends of these plates are formed apertures or bolt-holes a b, in which is iitted a bearing-bolt 5, provided with a fastening-nut G, as shown in the drawings.

B designates my improved shield or plate,

consisting of a piece of board or other suitable material of the desired length and Width, preferably made tapering from the rear end to the front, as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Adjacent to the rear end of the shield B is secured a metal plate 7, formed or provided with perforated ears 8 9, adapted to set over the projecting ends of the plates 3 and 4, with the apertures of the parts in registration to receive the fastening-bolt 5, as shown. The shield B is connected at its pivotal point so that it may swing or vibrate thereon on the plane which may be assumed by the trace or tug, and the rear end of the shield extends back beyond the point of connection to the whiffletree,.as at l0, so as to completely and effectually prevent the contact of the whiflietree, trace, or hook with trees, &c., and to carry anything which may impact or engage the outer face of the shield-post and free from the trace j and whiflietree. Adjacent to the outer end of the shield B, on the inner face thereof, is secured a trace-keeper l1, through which the tug or trace is loosely passed and by which the free forwardv end of the shield is carried, so that the trace by its connection through this keeper always carries the shield in substantial alinement therewith.

The use and adaptation of my invention are apparent from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings. All that is necessary to carry it into practice is to unite the shield to the whiffletree at its pivotal connection by means of the bolt and then to pass the outer trace or tug through the keeper on the shield and hook the end of the trace to the whiftletree-hook.

It will readily be perceived that other forms of pivotal connection for the shield to the end of the whiiiietree may b'e substituted without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. In combination with a whiffletree formed Afor provided with perforated ears projecting from its outer end, a shield B, having a transversely-arranged plate secured across itsinner face adj acent to its rear end, said plate being provided with perforated ears to engage over and aline with the ears on the Whiftletree,

a bolt projected through the ears to pivotally fasten the shield to the whifetree, and a.

` trace-keeper secured to the inner face of the shield adjacent to its outer end, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In combination with a, whifetree formed or provided at one end with upper and lower perforated ears, a shieid'B, made tapering from the rear to the front, a plate secured to the inner face of the shield formed with perforated ears to set over and aline with the ears on the whifietree, a. pivot pin or boit to connect the ears and permit the shield to swing or move on the plane assumed by the trace, and a, trace-keeper on inner face of the shield at its front end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination with a whi'fietree, of a shield composed of a, at piece of material having one end pivotally connected to the end of the whiftletree, and a trace-keeper on the inner face of the shield at its front end, substantially as described.
