Description

No. 6|0,902. Patented Sept. .20, I898. T. R. HETLAND.
MILK CAN COVER.
(Application filed Oct. 20, 1897.) (No Model.)
vgxjtmoow 1- lrrn TORGER It. HETLANl), OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
MILK-CAN COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,902, dated September 20, 1898.
Application filed October 20, 1897. Serial No. 655,812. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TORGER R. HETLAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Minneapolis, in the county of I-Iennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Can Covers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to milk-cans and covers therefor; and its object is to so construct such covers that they may be securely connected with the can and which when removed can be used as a measure.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a milk-can provided with my improved cover. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the cover inverted so as to serve as a measure. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sect-ion of the same. Figs. 4. and 5 are detail perspective views.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a milk-can of any ordinary or suitable construction, comprising the cylindrical body 2, the conical upper portion 3, and the cylindrical mouth 4:-
The numeral 5 designates the handle.
The numeral 6 designates the cover, consisting of a cup adapted to fit in the mouth of the can and provided with a handle 7. This cover has the open end portion 'made plane so as to snugly fit in said mouth, and is provided with a peripheral flange 8, which limits the inward movement of the cover and also serves to make a tight joint with the upper end of the mouth. The portion of the cover between flange and the closed end is formed with peripheral ribs 9, which are graduated, so that the cup can serve as a measure, the quantity of milk contained in the cup being indicated by the rib on a level therewith, as is well understood.
As seen in Figs. 4 and 5, the handled is formed with two slots 10, with which one edge of the handle 7 is adapted to engage when the cover 6 is put on, which will securely hold said cover in place and prevent its accidental disconnection from the can.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim is- The combination with a milk-can provided with a handle formed with slots at one edge, of the combined cover and measure consisting of a cup provided With a handle formed with slots at one edge adapted to engage with the slots of the can-handle, and said cup having the openend made plane-surfaced; to fit in the mouth of the can and provided with a peripheral flange and with a number of graduated ribs between said flange and the closed end, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence'of two witnesses.
TORGER R. IIETLAND.
