CANE-GUN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,675, dated September 13, 1898.

Be it known that I, ERIC HERMAN ERIcsoN, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Kpmansgatan, 301, in the city of Oscarshamn, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gun-Canes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part of the same.

This invention relates to improvements in gun-canes where that part of the handle containing the breech-block is slidable out to one side from the barrel or breech of the saine.

The object of the invention is to provide a gun-cane that shall be simple, cheap, and reliable and at the same time be available for use as a field-glass after the insertion of suitable lenses in place of the cartridge.

The invention consists principally in constructing the handle part which contains the breech-block so that it may be rst drawn out to one side from the barrel and thereupon may be turned backward, so as to lie alongside the barrel while the gun is to be loaded or while it is to be used as a eld-glass.

rIhe invention further consists in the particular construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows a longitudinal section of the handle end of a gun-cane according to this invention with the breech-block closed, and Fig. 2 shows the same when open. Fig. 3 is an end View of the same.

At the handle end of the barrel (the cartridge-chamber) a socket a is screwed on, which socket is provided with a side projection Z). This projection b is in its turn provided with an oblong hole or sloth', in which runs a pin d or the like, going through the said slot and being fastened to the handle c. Behind the barrel the socket a is open toward the handle, while at the inner surface of its three other sides there is provided a groove a', in which a corresponding edge or guide c of the handle fits in such a :manner that the handle is movable to and from the barrel at about a right angle, thus forming the breechbiock of the gun. The length of the slot b is such that when the handle has moved so far filom .the barrel that the pin CZ is in the outer end of the slot b', as shown in Fig. 2 by full lines, the guide c has come out of engagement with the corresponding slot a' in the socket a, in which case the handle can be turned about the pin d, so as to take up the position shown in Fig. 2 by dots and dashes. The extractor eis in the form of a two-armed lever and pivoted in a groove in the said proj ection b in such a manner that when the handle is turned about the pin d the end of the inner lever-arm of the said extractor catches the edge of the cartridge, while the outer arm is so arranged that it will be pressed down by a shoulder c2 of the breech-block when the handle is alongside the barrel, so that the first-mentioned arm of the extractor will draw out the empty cartridge.

By making the end ofthe extractor e with which the shoulder c2 engages in the shape of a spring, so that it will yield a little when the shoulder c2 commences to press upon the saine, the cartridge will be thrown out with greater force than otherwise would be the case. The said springy end of the extractor also serves the purpose of rubbing hard against the part c3 of the handle in order to produce so much resistance against the drawing out of the handle that the saine will not be liable to move out when not wanted to do so.

The hammer f is at its free end provided with a hook f which grips about a corresponding projection a2 of the socket a, so that the hammer in its closed position prevents the handle from being drawn out. The turning of the handle alongside the barrel also makes the insertion of cartridges easier than is the case when the handle is only drawn out sidewise and makes the discharging of the gun while loading less liable to occur.

I am aware that it is not new to arrange the breech-block and part of the handle to be slid out sidewise and turned backward and I do not claim this.

X'Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
