Description

KARL AUGUST IBRUNING, OF HERSTAL, BELGIUM.
GUN.
Speciication of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19,1913
Application filed July 16, 1912. Serial No. 709,810.
To all whom may concern.'
Be it known that I, KARL AUGUST BRUN- ING, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and resident of Herstal, in the Kingdom of Belgium, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to guns which have movable barrels locked by locking levers pivoted in the breech bolt, and more particularly to guns of the kind that can be utilized either as automatic guns or as ordinary guns, the locking levers in the latter case being controlled by a member movable relatively to the breech casing.
The invention resides in a construction whereby during automatic ring the movable member in question moves with the breech casing without acting on the locking levers.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of example in t-he accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a vertical transverse section of the device, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the movable member controlling the locking levers is constituted by the slide g. Noses g1 and g5 of this slide g pass through apertures in the breech casing and act upon the locking levers m by the intermediary of which the barrel and the bolt are rendered integral at the proper moment.
When in ordinary firing the slide g is drawn rearward the noses g1 act upon the noses m1 on the levers m. These levers are thus turned down toward the interior and the bolt thus released in the known manner is able to continue its rearward travel and produce the ejection. Upon the return of the bolt after it has pressed a cartridge into the barrel the noses g5 act upon the noses m of the levers m and again lock the bolt to thf barrel. In automatic firing on the othe] hand the slide g moves simultaneously witl the breech casing and does not act in an) way on the locking levers.
`What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent of the United States is l. In a movable-barrel firearm of the kine described, the combination of a movable breech casing, a breech bolt carrying a locking lever and contained within said breech casing, a member displaceable with the breech casing without acting upon the locking lever when the rearm is used for automatic firing but manually controlled when used for ordinary tiring, and means for operating the locking lever comprising a plurality of noses on said member which engage respectively with noses on said locking lever.
2. In a rearm of the kind described, the combination of a movable barrel, a movable breech casing formed with openings, a breech bolt contained within said casing, a plurality of locking levers -carried by said breech bolt, a sleeve displaceable along with the breech casing without acting upon the locking levers when the firearm is used for automatic firing but manually controlled when used for ordinary tiring, t-he said sleeve being formed with a plurality of noses which extend through the openings in said breech casing and act upon noses formed on said locking levers in the rearward travel of the sleeve to unlock the breech bolt from the barrel and allow the continued rearward movement of the breech bolt, and also to engage with other noses formed on said locking levers during the return movement of the breech bolt after a fresh cartridge has been injected, to relock the breech bolt with the barrel.
In testimony wherof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
KARL AUGUST BRAUNING.
