ADELAIDE A. AIKIN, OF STOCKTON, ALABAMA.
COPYING-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,397, dated August 23, 1898.
Application filed August 12, 1897.
To (Z5 whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ADELAIDE A. AIKIN, of Stockton, in the county of Baldwin and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copying-Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to copying-presses, the object of the same being to provide a simple and cheaply-constructed device of this character which is more easily operated than the screw-presses now so commonly employed.
The invention consists in the details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings formingapart of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved press. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View through the casing.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
My improved copying-press is made up of abed-plate 1, having inclined or beveled outer edges and a plane upper surface, and a casing 2, containing the operative parts of the device, located at a point adjacent to the center of one of the side edges of said bed-plate. Said casing has formed in the front side thereof an elongated slot 3, in which is pivoted and mounted to move a lever 4:, having connected to its forward end a weighted presser plate or bar 5, as clearly shown. Located on the inside of the casing 2 are two double pul1ey- blocks 6 and 7, respectively, the block 6 being secured to the bottom of saidcasing and the block 7 pivoted to the rear end of the lever 4. Also mounted in the side of said casing is a shaft 8, constituting a windlass, to which is attached a wire or cord 9, which passes over the pulleydolocks 6 and 7, respectively, the opposite end of said cord being attached to the under side of the upper A crank-handle 10 is formed upon the outer end of the shaft 8. Also secured to said shaft is a ratchet-wheel 11, which is Serial No. 648,066. (No model.)
adapted to be engaged by a spring-actuated dog 12 for holding the presser-plate in its raised position.
-The operation of my device is as follows: When it is desired to press-copy, the copybook is placed upon the upper surface of the bed-plate 1, the dog 12 is released, and the presser bar or plate 5 is permitted to slowly descend. The weight of said plate compresses the book in the usual manner. desired to remove the book, the crank-handle upon the outer end of the shaft 8 is turned to the right, which through the cord or wire 9 attached thereto and passing around the pulley- blocks 6 and 7 causes the rear end of the lever 4 to be drawn downwardly, elevating the forward end thereof, carrying the presser-plate 5. When the desired elevation has been reached, the downward movement of said presser-plate will be prevented by the engagement of the dog 12 with the teeth on the ratchet-wheel 11.
By reason of the fact that the double pulley- blocks 6 and 7 are employed the exertion necessary to elevate the presser-plate 5 is very.
much reduced.
It is deemed important that the double pulley-blocks be pivotally mounted, so that they will, at all times stand in a vertical plane re gardless of the position of the lever, whereby ease of operation is assured and all danger of binding or cramping of the parts is avoided.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a copying-press, the combination with the bed-plate and the casing having a vertical slot, of the horizontally-disposed lever pivoted within the casing and extended through said slot, a gravity-actuated presser-plate pivotally suspended from the outer end of said lever, a double pulley-block pivotally suspended from the inner end of the said lever within said casing, a double pulley-block pivotally secured to the bottom of the casing in vertical line with the first-mentioned block, a horizontal shaft supported in the casing with one end extended and provided with a crank-handle, a ratchet on said shaft, a pawl When it is engaging said ratchet and a rope passed specification in the presence of two subscribaround said blocks with one end attached ing witnesses. to the said shaft and adapted to be wound thereon and the other end connected with ADELAIDE AIKIN 5 the under side of the upper pulley-block, all Witnesses:
substantially as and for the purpose specified. F. S. BRYORS,
In testimony whereof I have signed this 0. BATES.
