My invention relates to a scaffold hoist for operation by man power.
The objects of my invention are to provide a device of this class which is new, novel, '5 practical and of utility; which will be speedy in operation; which will be safe; which will be strong and durable which will be operated with little effort; which may be operated by foot power; which will be efficient in accomplishing all of the purposes for which it is intended.
My invention provides a means which will lift a number of men together with their tools in an easy manner and at the same time, leave 1 the opera'tors hands free for other uses.
' With theseand other objects in view as will more fully appear, my invention consists in the construction, novel features, and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims hereto appended, and illustrated in the accompanying two-sheet drawing, of which,

Figure 3 is a perspective view of a scaffold showing four of the devices operably disposed thereon.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in all the figures. It is understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, shape, weight and other details of construction, within the scope 5 of my invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or broad principle of my invention and without sacrificing any of the advantages thereof; and it is also understood that the drawings are to be in 40 terpreted as being illustrative and not restrict-ive.
One practical embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the drawings comprises the following:
My device is shown supporting the boards 3 of a scaffold. Said device has a rectangular metal frame 4 provided across its top member with a roller 5. The side members of the frame 4. are provided with a plurality of 50 alined pairs of bearings 6 in each pair of which are, respectively, journaled shafts 7, 8 and 9. The lower cross member of said frame 4 is attached to said scaffold boards 3 by a pivotal means 25. A cable 15 is provided, and as shown in Figure 1, is to be securely fastened to a suitable holding means or beam 26 which is properly positioned with relation to where it is intended to have the scaffold located.
Mounted adjacent each end of said shaft 8 are toothed wheels 10 and 11. Said wheel 11 meshes with a toothed wheel 12 which is mounted in alinement with said wheel 11 upon the lower shaft 9 and is rigidly keyed thereto. Said shaft 8, between said wheels 10 and 11, is provided with a rope drum 1 1 to which one end of said cable 15 is attached in a usual manner. Said drum, when turned, is adapted to wind, or unwind, said cable 15 for raising and lowering the scaffold. It will be noted that said rope 15 will slidably contact said roller 5 and will thus be prevented from undue wear. Loosely mounted upon the said shaft 9 is a lever or arm 16 which is adapted at its free end to be reciprocated upward and downward. Pivotally disposed upon said lever'16 is a foot operable pawl 18, one end of which is adapted to engage be tween teeth of said wheel 12 and when so engaged acts as a medium for turning said wheel 12 and axle 9 in bearings 6. Then wheel 12 is thus turned its teeth upon the upper portion of the wheel which mesh with the teeth of said wheel 11 cause the rotation of said wheel 11 and consequently cause the rotation of said shaft 8 and rope drum 14. For the purpose of raising saidlever arm 16 I provide a retrieving spring 19 which is attached to said lever 16 at its lower end and to said shaft 8 at its upper end. With each provided witha head 23 and a handle or lever arm 24 which are adapted to be hand operated for setting said wheels 10 and 11 against rotation. By providing a pawl for each of said wheels 10 and 11 I thus secure reater safety against accidents and danger. prings 27 are provided to lock said pawls 20 against unduelor unauthorized.movement.
It will be understood that, if desirable, a duplicate of lever 16 and its accompanying co operating parts may be provided for the said toothed wheel 10. I prefer, however, to have onlyone operated at a time. The permitting of the lever to be operated. by the foot leaves the use of the hands for the operating of said pawls or for. other uses when needed. In. operationlever arm 16 is held bysaidretrieving spring 19 in a position as indicated in, Figure 2, Lever 16is pusheddownward by the foot against the tension of; saidspring 19 causing wheel 12 meshing with wheel 11 torrotate wheel 10' and rope, drum, 14, thus winding up said rope-15. The foot is removed and retrieving spring l9 iinmediately returns said lever 16 to its original position. The contacting endof said pawl 18-slipsover the edges of the teeth on said wheel 12. When the scaffoldhas thus been raised to a desired height pawls 20 are slipped into en,- gagement with the'teeth in said wheels 10 and 11 and spring 27 is clamped about handle '24 thus anchoring said wheels 10 and 11 against any undue rotation. V
Obviously, the invention is susceptible of embodiment informs. other than that which 7 is illustratedin the accompanying drawings and described herein, and applicable, for the uses and purposes other than as detailed, and I therefore consider as my own all such modifications andadaptations andother uses of the form of the device herein'described as fairly fall within the scope of my invention. Having thus'described my invention what is claimed anddesired to be secured by Letters Patent, is: I

2. In adevice as setv forth, a rectangular frame, bearings in pairs carried thereby in alinement laterally, three shafts mounted respectively-insa-id bearings, a toothed smaller gear wheel mounted on the lowermost shaft and operable therewith, larger toothed gear wheels mounted on the medial shaft operable by said smaller toothed gear wheel and operating a cable drum, a cable drum mounted with said larger gear wheels on said medial shaft, a cable connected to said drum for raising and lowering said frame, hand lever I operable therewith for engaging the teeth on said larger wheels for securely holding and releasing said scaffold, lever operated mechanism having a footoperated pawl thereon for actuating said smallerrwheel, said smaller wheel meshing with and rotating said larger wheel, and spring means for operatively repositioning saidl-lever and pawl upon release.

Ina scaffoldlift, aframeadapted for v ing side vertical members and top and-bot tom horizontal members, bearings about the frame disposed laterally in pairs, a'first, sec- 0nd and thirdshaft mountedrespectively in said pairs of bearings, a toothed gear wheel mounted. adjacent each end of said second shaft, a cable drum between said wheels integral with said shaft, a cable adapted" for windingand unwinding on said drum and to be suitably anchored. thereabove, at hand operated pawl, adjacent each end of. said first shaft adapted to engage between the teeth of and for holding and releasing said toothed wheels, an additional and smaller toothed wheel on said third. shaft'having its teeth meshing with the teeth of one of said larger toothedwheels, a leveron said third shaft, a foot operable pawl movably mounted on said lever adapted to engage, the teeth of said smaller toothed wheel, said lever, pawl, and smaller wheel being adapted tov operate one of said larger toothedwheels and to turn said drum and the other larger. toothed Wheel for winding. and. unwinding said cable, a spring having one end'anchoredito said lever and its other end anchored to said secondshaft for re-positioning said leverand foot operable pawl when released, and a friction rolleron said top horizontal'portion of said frame for contacting said'cable the bottom horizontal portion of said frame being adapted to support a scaffold. 7

A scaffold lift, having in combination, a frame adapted for holding various parts bers and top and bottom horizontal members, bearings about the frame disposed laterally in pairs, a first, second and third shaft mounted respectively in said pairs of bearings, a toothed gear wheel mounted adjacent each end of said second shaft, a cable drum between said wheels integral with said second shaft, a cable adapted for winding and unwinding on said drum and to be suitably anchored thereabove, a hand operated pawl adjacent each end of said first shaft adapted to engage between the teeth of and for holding and releasing said toothed gear wheels, an additional and smaller wheel mounted on said third shaft having teeth meshing with the teeth of one of said larger toothed wheels, a foot operable lever on said third shaft, a foot operable pawl movably mounted on said lever and adapted to engage the teeth of said smaller toothed wheel, said lever, pawl, and smaller wheel being adapted to operate one of said larger toothed wheels and to turn said drum and the other larger toothed wheel to wind and unwind said cable, a spring having one end anchored to said lever and its other end anchored to said second shaft for re-positioning said lever and foot operable pawl, and a friction roller on said top horizontal portion of said frame, the bot- 1m tom horizontal portion of said frame being adapted to support a scaffold.
