To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrii ALLEN CoonsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Orange, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindlasses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to windlasses and the object of my invention is to provide a windlass of universal application, that is, a windlass by means of which a pull may be eX- erted in any direction, either downwardly, upwardly, or in a horizontal direction. V
A further object of my invention is to provide a windlass which may be operated by a reciprocating lever, a crank or by both lever and crank simultaneously as desired.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the class mentioned which shall be of great power or capacity and which shall be of comparatively small dimensions and readily operated with a minimum amount of force.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device as mentioned which shall be of simple construction and which may be readily assembled or taken apart for repairs.
A further object of my invention is to provide a windlass characterized as above mentioned and equipped with means for securing the same to a derrick or other support as desired. i
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists generally in a suitable frame, a pair of co-acting chain -wheels mounted therein and suitably geared together, and means for turning said wheels, said wheels being so arranged that a chain may be passed between and about the same and extended either upwardly, downwardly or horizontally as required by the character of the work to be performed.
My invention further consists in a windlass characterized as mentioned in which one of the chain wheels is provided with a ratchet wheel and a large pinion cach formed integrally therewith, a lever, a pawl on said lever engaging said ratchet wheel, a crank shaft and a pinion on said crank shaft meshing with the large pinion above mentioned whereby the device may be operated either by the lever, the crank or by both simultaneously.
My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specifica* tion and in which- Figure `1 is a side elevation of the windlass embodying my invention illust-rating the same secured to the mast of a dei-rick, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the windlass upon an enlarged'scale, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal seetion taken on the line wof Fig. 2, Fig. et is a rear elevation of the device, Fig. 5 is a detail view of the ratchet and ratchet operating pawl, and Fig. 6 is a detail elevation of a drum consisting of one of the chain wheels, the ratchet and the gears or pinions formed integrally therewith.
The frame of the device comprises a pair of side plates 1 and 2, a bottom 3 and a transverse bar l spanning the top. These are preferably cast in one piece. lf desired the frame may also be provided with a rear plate 5. Extending transversely through the frame are a pair of shafts 6 and 7 upon which are mounted co-acting chain wheels 8 and 9 respectively, the peripheries of which are recessed as at 10 to receive the links of a chain passing between or around the same. Formed integrally with the chain wheels 8 and 9 are intermeshing pinions 11 and 12 respectively. The wheel S has also formed integrally therewith a large pinion 13 and a ratchet wheel 14, the pinion 13 being upon the opposite side of the wheel S from the pinion 11 and the ratchet being upon the same side as the latter pinion and spaced therefrom. It will be seen that this portion of the device comprises a pair of drums rotatably mounted upon their respective shafts, one drum comprising the wheel 8, the gears 11 and 13 and the ratchet 111, and the other drum consisting of the wheel 9 and integral pinion or gear 12. The shaft 6 is arranged in a horizontal plane above that of the shaft 7 for a purpose which will appear hereinafter. Each of the shafts 6 and 7 is provided with a head 15 and a threaded end 16 upon which is threaded a bur or nut 17. By this construction the parts may be readily removed by withdrawing the shafts from the frame.
Arranged above the shaft 7 and parallel therewith is a shaft 18, the ends of which project beyond the sides of the frame and are square as at 19 to receive a crank 20. Fixed to the shaft 18 is a small pinion 21 which meshes with the large pinion 13 on the shaft 6. The pinion 21 is provided with a. sleeve 22 through which extends a set screw 23 by means of which the pinion is xed to the shaft. By loosening'the set screw the shaft 18 may be readily withdrawn from the frame.
Mounted on a transverse shaft 24, above the shaft 6, is a lever 25 comprising a long or power arm 26 and a short or work arm 27. The shaft 24 is mounted in brackets 28 extending upwardly from t-he side plate 1 and transverse member 4. Pivotally secured to the work arm of the lever is a pawl 29 vwhich engages the ratchet 14, and a coiled spring 30 is provided for holding the pawl in engagement with said ratchet. The pawl comprises a rectangular member consisting of a pair of parallel longitudinal arms 31, a transverse cylindrical pivot portion 32 at the upper end and a transverse ratchet engaging portion 33 at the lower end, the latter having a rounded or cylindrical lower face 34 and a beveled or inclined flat upper face 35 which engages under the teeth of the ratchet. It is to accommodate one of the arms 31 that the ratchet 14 is spaced from the gear 11 as above mentioned. The work arm 27 is reduced in width to extend between the arms 31 of the pawl and to form the shoulders 36 which shoulders are adapted to engage the pawl and throw the same out of engagement with the ratchet wheel when the power arm 26 is fully depressed. The upper portion of the arm 27 is cutaway and recessed as at 37 to receive the transverse portion 32 of the pawl, and a cap plate 38 is secured over said portion to hold the same in position.
Loosely mounted upon the shaft 18 is a dog 3 9 which extends between the arms of the pawl 29 and engages the ratchet 14 to prevent reverse movement of the same.
40 indicates a hook member on the dog 39 by means kof which said dog may be drawn out of engagement with the ratchet wheel.
l/Vhen using the device to exert a downn ward pull as when used upon the mast 41 of a derrick, the chain 42 is passed downwardly over the outer face of the wheel 8 then under the same and upwardly between the wheels 8 and 9, over the wheel 9 and downwardly, passing out the back of the frame if the same is open or through an aperture 43 in the bottom plate 3.
To secure the device to a derriek brackets 44 are provided which are formed with eyes 45 to receive the ends of the shaft 6 as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. Straps 46 are also provided for securing the frame to bracket members 47 iixed to the mast 41.
When the device is to be used for exerting an upward pull the chain is extended upwardly through an aperture 48 in the bottom 3, between the wheels 8 and 9 and over the former passing down over the outer side thereof. For a horizontal pull the chain may pass directly in the front of the frame, under the wheel 8, then up between the chain wheels, over the wheel 9 and down through the aperture 43; or the chain` may pass around the pulley, not shown, thence up through the aperture 48, between the chain wheels and then over either of them as desired.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the class described, a frame comprising a pair of parallel rectangular side plates, a bottom plate and a transverse bar at the upper end, all integrally formed, a pair of shafts mounted in said frame in planes one above the other, a third shaft arranged above the lowermost of the first mentioned shafts, a pair of co-acting chain wheels on the first mentioned shafts, intermeshing pinions formed integrally with said chain wheels, a ratchet wheel and a large pinion both formed integrally with the chain wheel on the uppermost of the first mentioned shafts, a pinion on the said third shaft meshing with said large pinion, a pivotally mounted dog engaging said ratchet. wheel, a lever pivotally mounted upon said transverse bar and a pawl on said lever engaging said ratchet, said bottom plate being provided with apertures directly beneath the sides of the periphery of the lowermost chain wheel and the front of the frame adjacent the uppermost chain wheel being open, substantially as described.
