Be it known that. I, ALVIN B. CLARK, of Richmond, in the county of Wayne, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful improvement in Apparatus for Turning the Leaves of Sheet Music; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear-,and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure I is a perspective view.

In all the figures I indicate identical parts by the same letters.
My improvement consists in the employment of a magnet attached to a swinging arm, for turning the leaves, which have clips attached to them adhering to the magnet. Alsein the arrangement of the mechanism operating the swinging arm. Also, in attaching the clips to a semicircular guide, so arranged that the arm, in swinging, shall detach the magnet from the clips when the leaves are turned.
A is the music stand, upon which is placed the music book. I attach clips, B, to as many leaves as are designed to be turned. IThese clips have jaws, the froutvone of which must he formed of iron or steel. The rear one is a spring which, pressing against the back of the leaf, holds the clip ou the corner of the leaf. The
lupper part of the clip is an eye, through which passes the semicircular rod C, attached to the music stand or rack A. The length of the iron part of the clip should be at' least equal to the length of the diameter of the point of the horse-shoe magnet D, which will attract the clip and cause it to adhere to the poles of the magnet. The magnet is suspended upon a vertical rod, E, adjustably attached to the horizontal arm F, which is, in like manner, adjustably connected with the vertical shaft G, the bearings of which are in the standard G. This Shaft G is caused to revolve half round by mechanism which may be variously arranged, according to the circumstances, one arrangement of which I will describe.
The shaftG has on its lower end a pinion, G', Working into the cogs upon the rack II, which is connected by the pitman IIwith the arm I', upon the counter-shaft I, another arm,I, of which is connected by the bar K with the cross-lever K, which is forced downward by the spring K, and maybe raised by the pedal L. By the movement of the lever K, the rack H receivesl a reciprocating motion, turning the pinion and shaft G one-half round, and Swinging with it the oscillating arm F, and magnet D, which, adhering to the clip, Will carry with it the leaf of music. The semicircular rod C is so placed that the end towards which the leaf is turned shall be further from the shaft G than the end on which the clips are placed 'in the rst instance; consequently, as the magnet carries over the leaf, it is drawn across the clip and becomes detached when the leaf is fully turned. This motion should be made by a quick action upon the pedal. When the foot is taken from the pedal, the force of the spring K! carries bao'lc the magnet, which instantly adheres to the next clip, and so the leaves may be turned in succession.v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Theswinging magnet D, in combination with the clip B, attached to the leaf, when operating suhsran tially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. In an apparatus for turning the leaves 0f sheet music, suspending'a magnet upon an oscillating arm, and so connecting the arm with a pedal by intermediate mechanism that the leaves maybe turned successively by the action of the foot of the player, substantially as described. i
3. In combination with the swinging magnet I), I claim the clips B, attached to the rod C, when the latter is so arranged in relation to the centre of oscillation that the magnet shall be detached as the leaf is turned, substantially in the manner set forth.
