J.OHOFPAT. SAUER KRAUT PRESS.
Patented June 29,1897" l/V va /r00 I WW 9% UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH Ol-IOFFAT, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
SAUER-KRAUT PRESS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 585,640, dated June 29, 1897. Application filed. November 9, 1896. Serial No. 611 ,55']. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH CHOFFAT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sauer-Kraut Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in sauer-kraut presses; and it consists of an inexpensive mechanism for pressing, which mechanism is adapted to be used with a tub, barrel, or bucket of ordinary or special construction, my object being to cheapen as well as improve the facilities for such use. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l a plan view of the entire apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a plan of follower H and G. Fig. i is a vertical section of the apparatus, showing the parts of the pressing mechanism in different positions from those shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan of a lever-yoke. Fig. 6 is a vertical side view of the yoke.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The letter A designates a bucket'or other suitable receptacle, and B is an upright spindle standing axially within the receptacle and secured to the bottom thereof, as at B, in any suitable manner, the body of this spindle being provided with a series of perforations I.
O is'a yoke having a central upright hole fitting looselyover the standard and provided with a transverse perforation passin g through the hole and adapted to aline with those in the spindle, and the yoke has forked extremities in which on pins J are pivoted the bent levers D.
G H designates a follower also having a central hole fitting loosely over the spindle, the part H being preferably in the form of a strip standing across the top of the part G, as seen in Fig. 3.
I designates a pin adapted to be passed through any of the perforations I either just above the follower or through the transverse perforation in the follower and also through one of those in the spindle.
The operation of this mechanism is as follows: The bucket A having been suitably charged with prepared material, the follower G H is placed in position thereon, as shown in Fig. 4. The yoke C is next placed in position above the said follower and upon the spindle B, with levers D D in upright position, as shown in said Fig. 4. The pin I is inserted within one of the perforations through the spindle, either just above the'yoke or also through the perforation therein, which latter is preferable, and the levers D D are moved in the direction of arrows F until their lower and shorter ends are substantially in the vertical lines K and coinciding with their pivotal points J, which latter movement completes the pressing of the material within the bucket A, all as illustrated in Fig. 4.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a kraut-press, the combination with a receptacle, a spindle rising from the bottom thereof and provided with transverse perforations, and a follower within the receptacle loosely surrounding the spindle; of a yoke loosely fitting said spindle and a transverse perforation adapted to register with those in the spindle, a removable pin taking through the registering perforations, and levers pivoted to the yoke and having one of their extremities bearing upon the follower, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a kraut-press',the combination with a receptacle, a spindle rising from the bottom thereof and a follower within the receptacle loosely surrounding the spindle; of a yoke loosely fitting said spindle, and forked extremities, means for adjusting the height of the yoke on the spindle, and bent levers pivotally mounted within said forks of the yoke, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH OHOFFAT.
