To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that IJVILLIAM EDWARD HUNT, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Montreal, in the district of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Supports, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent of the Dominion of Canada, dated August 21,1897, No. 57,167; alsoLetters Patent of Belgium, datedAugust 16, 1897, No. 129,722; also Germ an Design Patent, No. 79,585, dated August 23, 1897 also Letters Patent of Austria, dated August 14, 1897, No. 47/2,969, and also Letters Patent of Great Britain, dated July 28, 1897, No. 17,722,) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to supports for bicycles; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the support, showingit extended. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the support closed.

Figs. 3, 4, and 5.are side views showing modifications in the lower part of the support.

A is a split bar which forms the lower portion of the support. The lower part of the bar A forms two outwardly-curved springlegs a.

B is a spring interposed between the legs for spreading them apart. Two similar springs can be used, if desired, and arranged as shown in Fig. 1.

Instead of using a split bar the spring-legs can be bent around a block C, as shown in Fig. 5.

The upper part of the support consists of a tube D, which is slidable over the sprin g-legs.

The tube D is provided with a longitudinal slot d, and E isa clamping-screw which passes through the said slot and engages with the spring-legs. When a split bar is used, the screw is screwed into the solid portion of the bar; but when the spring-legs are bent around a block the said screw engages with the block.

The spring-legs may be slid within the tube when the support is not in use. when the support is to be used, the spring-legs are slid far enough out of the tube to admit the upper end of the tube being placed under any proj ecting portion of the bicycle when the springlegs rest on the ground. The spring-legs are secured to the tube in this position by tighteningthe screw E. It will be apparent that by this construction the spring-legs can be adjusted to any height, the screw E holding the bar A fixedly at any point within its limit of movement.

If desired, the tube can be open on one side, so that it is only a partial tube; but suffi cient bearing should be provided for contractin g the spring-legs when the parts are pushed together.

I am aware that bicycle-supports have been made in which pivoted legs have been inserted in a tube to be slidable therein; but in these constructions the legs are formed of two por tions hingedly connected together and adapted to be separated by a spring; but this construction is disadvantageous in View of the fact that the legs are liable to spread when in use by reason of there being nothing to prevent such spreading.

What I claim is- In a bicycle-support, the combinationwith a tubular upper portion having a longitudinal slot; of a cylindrical bar, slidablymounted in said tubular portion, said bar being split longitudinally for a portion of its length; and a clamping-screw connected to said bar and adjust-ably mounted operatively in said slot, substantially as described.
