SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters APatent No. 606,609, dated June 28, 1898.
` Application filed January 4, 189i?. Serial No. 665,547. (No model.)
To au whom t may con/cern,.-
Be it known that we,"DEw1rr C. WEED and FREDRIC ATKIN, citizens of .the .United States, residing at `Vickery, Vin the'county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oultivator-Plowsyand vwe do declare the follow-V ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, lreference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in plows, and more particularly to the class of plows known as cultivators, and has for its object the production of a drag plow or cultivator wherein the'shovels or cutter-shovels are of peculiar shape and may be adj usted by raising or lowering to any height and in which the saidcutter-shovels are set at such an angle to the moving direction of the plow or cultivator that the dirt will be properly furrowed'- and roots and other matter readily severed by the cutter-shovels as they pass through the ground.
The invention further consists in the novel arrangementand combination of the several parts of the device hereinafter described, illus trated in the drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the device partly broken away to show the arrangement of the shovels. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View of the cultivator, showing the angle at which the said cuttershovels are set; and Fig. 3 shows details of construction.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. v
Referring to the drawings by letter, V indicates aV- shaped frame' having a brace or cross-piece A therein. This frame V hassecured upon `its'npper side the handles a a, which are joined Yby-the rung a and braced at the rear of said 'frame by the supports o2 a2. In the front end of said frameB is a gagewheel B, adj ustably secured thereinby screwl threads ,or otherwise, so that it can be raised or lowered vertically at will.
g O isa' hook secured to the front end of said kfra, rneV,to which themoving power is attached.
D isa metallicposthaving on the lower end thereof, integral therewith, and set at about `right angles thereto a cutter-shovel D.
cutter-shovel D has a arin g shape, as shown, and has its forward edge sharpened to cut ,roots and other things with which it comes -into contact. D2 is a bracket secured to the piece A in the frame V and is provided with an oset therein for receiving and holding the said post D securely and firmly in the said frame.
d is a brace-rod secured at one end. to the front of the frame Vandvat the other upon the post D at apoint d', and serves the purposeof holding the said post rigid when the cultivator is in use. The front of the post D,
between the point d2 and the cutter-shovel D',
is sharpened to form a cutter D2, as shown.
E E are cutter-shovels secured to the rear part of the frame V, on the sides thereof, as shown, and are braced thereto by brace-rods E E. These cutter-shovels E E are of peculiar shape and are formed by taking a piece ofv iron or steel and bendingit to the shape shown in the drawings, the portion e thereof being the vertical or supporting portion and the part e' the cutterfshoveh This portion e is set at about right angles to the upright portionand thrown slightly vback and the front edgethereof sharpened to form a cutter. The part e is provided with anumber of openings c c c for the purpose of permitting a vertical adjustment of the said shovels and also to af- "ford a means whereby they may be braced The A roots, the., will be readily severed instead of dragged along, as is the case where these cutter-shovels are at right angles to the direction of the plow. By this construction the plow is not only easier to run, but performs its work to much better advantage. lt is apparent from the construction of this device that it maybe used to great advantage as a sodcutter, as the cutters may be set so as to cut the sod any thickness desired and of proper width.
Having thus described our invention, we claiml. In a cultivator of the character described the combination of the V-shaped frame provided with suitable handles, with a cutterpost secured to the middle of said vframe and having on its lower end at right angles thereto a cutter-shovel, and on the rear of said frame the cuttenshovels E, E, having the cuthis FREDRIG ATKIN.
