LATCH AND LOCK COMBIN SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,550, dated June 28, 1898.

Be it known that I, OBADInH HOLMES, a citizen of the United States,'and a resident of Blue Springs, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new;

and useful Improvements in a Combined Door Lock and Latch; and I do declare the follow-y ing to be a full, clear, and exact'descriptionrof the invention, such as will enable AKothers skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same, reference' being'had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon,fwhich form a part of this specification. l

Figure l is a plan view of a lock embodying my invention, with the cap-plate removed and the bolt in unlocked position; Fig. 2 is a similar view `with the cap-plate partly broken away and the bolt in locked position. This invention is designed to provide a combined look and latch which obviates the employment of separate lock and latch bolts, which is of simple, cheap, and'durable construction, and which can be used either as a mortise or as an outsidey lock-and latch.

Vith these objects in view the invention consists in the novel y'construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described,V and pointed out in the appended claims. A Referring to the Yaccompanying drawings,`

The operation is as follows: In the normal position of the block or bolt Gr the latch can be freely retracted by the operation of the IOO knob-spindle, the inner ends of the legs cl sliding freely into the spaces g and g. rlhe key being turned in the proper direction and engaging the Wards t, the bits of the key ride down the inclined walls Z at one side of Ythe depressions Zof the tumblers and into e11- gagement with lthe straight walls Z2 thereof, thereby forcing the tumblers back in to their seats against the pressure of the spring L, their teeth 7a3 being Withdrawn from engagement with the notches m m. As soon as these teeth are so Withdrawn the pressure of the key upon the tumblers is sufficient to move the block or bolt endwise sufficiently to close the space g against the entrance of the leg d of the latch and thereby prevent the retraction ofthe saine. As the key is further turned the bits ride up the opposite inclined walls Z', thereby releasing the tumblers from the pressure thereof, and the teeth are at once thrown into engagement with the recesses m. Further idle movement of the key is upon the wards 7L.

In unlocking the operation is the reverse of that just described, the tumblers being first forced back out of engagement with the recesses m', the block or bolt being moved back to its normal position, and the tumblers then being released and being thrown by the spring into engagement with the recesses m.

Any suitable number of ltumblers may be employed with a corresponding adaptation of the parts G and l'I and of the key.

It will be observed that the arrangement of the tumblers and of the ward-plate is such that the tumblers cannot be operated except by a key especially adapted thereto.

The sliding block or bolt being placed behind the latch and without lateral projection to either side thereof does not require an increased width of lock-case for its accommodation. It will be noted that by reason of this fact it is possible to use a very narrow lock-case.

Having thus described my inve1ition,\vl1at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination with a reciprocating latch, its protracting-spring, and means for retracting said latch, of the endwise-movable block or bolt adapted to be moved into the path of the latch behind the inner end of the same to secure it against reciprocation,springpressed tumblers carried by seated in and pivoted within parallel recesses or grooves in said block or bolt and having means whereby they are adapted to engage with a stationary part of the lock in both positions of said block or bolt, and a suitable key adapted to said grooves or recesses and to engage with said tumblers to retract them from engagement with said stationary part, and also to effeet an endwise movement of the said block or bolt, substantially as specilied.

2. The combination with the case, the reciprocating latch, its protracting-spring and retracting device, of an endwise -movable block or bolt adapted to be moved into position to lock said bolt against retraction, said block or bolt having parallel wards and a V- shaped notch or recess cutting through the said wards, the pivoted spring-pressed tumblers seated between the said wards and having each a tooth or projection at its free end portion, said tumblers also having depressions therein formed with inclined lateral walls and straight betteln Walls, a stationary wardplate having recesses therein to receive the teeth or projections of the said tumblers in both positions of the sliding block or bolt, and a suitable key adapted to said wards and tumblers, substantially as specified.

3. The combination with the reciprocating latch, of the slidable block or bolt arranged to be moved behind said latch to lock it against retraction, said block or bolt having parallel Wards in one face or edge and a V- shaped notch or recess cutting through the said wards, pivoted spring-pressed tumblers seated between the said wards and having each a tooth or projection at its free end portion, a stationary ward-plate having recesses adapted to receive the teeth or projections of I the said tumblers and also a scmicircular recess whose wall is formed with a series of wards which are respectively in the planes of the corresponding wards of the said block or bolt, and a suitable key adapted to said wards and tumblers, the latter having intermediate bent or depressed portions upon which the key is adapted to act, substantially as specitied.
