PATENT THOMAS P. GREGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MANHOLE-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,206, dated June 28, 1898,
Application filed August 14, 1 8 9 7.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. GREGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Manhole-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to that class of manhole-covers wherein the manhole is protected by two members, of which the top is substantially dish-shaped and filled with as phaltum, granolithic, or similar matter; and in such connection it relates to the construction and arrangement of such a filled 1nanhole-cover which is practically noiseless and non-slipping, permits of Ventilation of the manhole, and is likewise readily drainable.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a cover noiseless and non-slipping, for a manhole, of simple construction and arrangement, and one which is adapted to permitof the ventilation of the manhole, as well as the drainage of moisture or water from the same.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a manhole-cover constructed and arranged in substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, in whicha Figure l is a top or plan View of a manholecover embodying main features of my invention and partially broken away to more clearly illustrate the construction and arrangement of the cover, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional Referring to the drawings, a represents the frame orwall surmounting the manhole b and serving as a support for both members of the cover. The frame a is provided with the concentrically-arranged webs a and a the inner web a of which forms a seat for the inner member 01 of the cover, while the outer web a is provided with a horizontally-arranged flange a, forming a seat for the upper dishshaped member 6 of the cover. The upper member 6 is adapted to be'filled with asphal- Serial No. 648,227. No model.)
tum, granolithic, or similar matter, and its rim 6' is perforated, as at 6 to form a, series of airholes or vents extending from the atmosof the cover. The inner member dis pro vided with a series of legs or props cl, screwed or otherwise secured tothe lower face of the member and adapted to engage the upper edge or rim of the web a to support the member at above said web. Between the concentric webs a and a is formed a chamber a wherein moisture is adapted to collect, and this chamber is connected by a pipe a with the sewer and is adapted to drain off through said pipe. The upper member 6 is provided with handles or rings e to facilitate its ready removal from the frame a, and the inner member d is like wise provided with similar rings or handles (1 for the same purpose. The under side of the member 9 is strengthened by the ribs e and the frame a is likewise provided with strengthening-ribs a", adapted to support the outer web a.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination in a manhole-cover, of a frame or wall surmounting the manhole, two
of legssecured to said inner member and fitted on the inner web to support "the inner member above the inner web and a drain-pipe leading from "the compartment between the webs to a sewer or other receptacle for moisture, substantially as and for the purposes described. V
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. THOMAS P. GREGER.
