SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,781, dated J' une 14, 1898. Application filed January 21., 1897. Serial No. 620,035. (No model.)

Be it known that I, THOMAS ALFORDy GAN- NOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradford, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Au ger-Handies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled Io in theart to which it appertainsto make and use the same.

This invention has reference to a novel construction in a tool-handle, and is adapted v:more especially for use as an auger-handle,

in connection with which different augers or bits may be readily inserted or removed.

The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, Figure lis a central longitudinal section of a handle constructed in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section taken at right angles to the section shown in Fig. 1.

The said handle consists, essentially, of two members 1 and 2, between which the augerhandle is gripped. These members 1 and 2 are hollow and telescope at their inner ends,

-These parts are provided with the enlargements or heads 3 at their inner ends, as shown. Through the outer member is an opening 4 to receive the'end of the auger, whilethe inner 3 5 end of the member 2 is notched, as shown at 5, to engage the end of said auger. Situated within both of these members is a rod 6, that is rigidwith the lmember 1 by means of the nut 7 and the enlargement between the shoul- 4o ders 8 of said rodand the shoulder 9 within said member. The rod 6 is provided with the central aperture 10, through which the end of the auger passes, while the end portion of said rod that is situated within an outer end of the member 2 is screw-threaded to receive the nut 12.` This nut has the stem portion 13 extending into the end of the member 2 and also a shoulder bearing against the end. In this way it is seen that by turning the nut 12 the said member 2 can be forced inwardly to cause this inner end to grip the end of the auger that is situated therein. Y

It is seen that a handle constructed in this manner is inexpensive and contains few parts that are liableuto get out of order, and, furthermore, the auger can be quickly applied and removed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv .l An auger-handle consisting of a hollow member 1 provided with a head 3 at one end thereof, an opening 4 through said head to receive the end of 'a bit or auger, a rod 6 secured within the hollow member 1 and projecting beyond the inner end of the same, said rod 6 being provided'with an opening 10 thatis situated opposite the opening 4 in the head of the member 1 and having a screw-threaded outer end, a hollow member 2 provided at one end with a head 3 to fit withinthe head 3 of the member 1, the endof said head 3 of the member 2 being notched to engage the end of a bit or auger that is inserted within the opening 4, a nut 12'"having a stem 13 situated within the outer end of the member 2 and having a shoulder bearing against the end of said member 2, said nut l2 being screwthreaded Vinteriorlyv to receive the screwthreaded end of the rod 6.
