0. O,BOLTON. WHIPFLETREE HOOK.
No. 605,381. Patented June 7,1898.
NITED STAT s PATENT rrion;
CALVIN O. BOLTON, DENVER, MICHIGAN.
WHIFFLETREE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,381, dated June 7, 1898.
Application filed April 1 3, 18 97.
To all whom it nut/y concern.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN O. BOLTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Newaygo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Whiftletree-Irons and Tug-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the folthe tug may be positioned and its accidental displacementv prevented, combined with an iron for attachment to the whiftletree.
The invention consists of certain other novel details of construction hereinafter more particularly set forthand claimed. y
In the accompanying drawings,forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, the whiffletree being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation With the ferrule partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view, of the thimble and a portion of the hook to which it is attached, showing the spring upon the interior thereof.
Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates a. ferrule which constitutes the whiffletreeiron, the same being provided with the passage 2, through which pins 3 extend for securing the same to the whiffletree. Raised from the outer surface of this ferrule near its outer end is a hook 4. The extremity of the 4 hook terminates short of the surface of the which extends a pin 7, said pin entering the hook 4:. Thus the thimble is freely movable on the hook, and for holding it normally lowered I provide the coiled spring 8, which is adapted to bear atone end against the inner surface of the closed end 9 of the thimble and at its opposite end against theend of the hook. To position the thimble upon the hook, it is inserted through the opening 10 in the Serial No. 631,921. (No model.)
ferrule, as will be clearly understood. The lower end of the thimble is beveled or inclined, so that the cockeye carried by the tug may readily press the same upward when it is desired to attach the tug to the hook.
The hook is strengthened by the web 11, as will appear from the drawings. When it is desired to attach the tug to the hook, the same is slipped thereunder, forcing the thimble upwardly, and the tug inserted upon the hook. To detach the tug from the hook, the thimble is moved upwardly by means of the lug 12, formed thereon, which constitutes a finger-hold, and the tug removed. A side opening 13 is formed in the ferrule and communicates with the opening l0,whereby when the thimble is inserted through the ferrule the lug will pass through. the side opening 13, and thethimble is then turned so that the lug will be brought out of line with the opening through which it is inserted.
From the above description it is. seen that I have produced a combined whiffletree-iron and tug-hook, the tug-hook being so constructed that all danger of accidental displacement of the tug therefrom is avoided.
.Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire tosecure by Letters Patent, isv 1. A combined whiifletreeiron and tughook, comprising a tapering ferrule or sleeve adapted to be secured to the Whiffletree, an inturned hook formed integral with said ferrule at its outer end, a thimble movable upon the free end of the hook, said thimble being provided with a beveled outer or rear end and with a longitudinal slot, a pin on the hook passing through said slot in the thimble, and means for holding the thimble normally extended to substantially close the space between the extremity of the hook and the ferrule, substantially as described.
2. A whiffletree-iron and tug-hook, comprising a ferrule adapted to be secured to the whiffletree, a hook formed integral with said ferrule near its outer end, a thimble movable upon the free end of said hook, said thimble having its free end beveled, the ferrule being provided with an opening through which the thimble can be inserted to be positioned upon the'hook, a spring for holding the thinlble normally extended for substantially clos- In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing the space between the end of the hook ing Witnesses.
and the'surface of the ferrule, and a hook or 5 projection on the thimble adapting it to be operated by hand for releasing the tug, substantially as described.
