CAR-PET SWEEPBR.
No. @Gli-83.
wrm-1 mami 'JOSEPH A. STAVEN, citizens of the United 5 of Kent and State of lliiehigan, have invented ro ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to `carpet-sweepers; and its object is .to provide i5' tures, hereinafter more fully described, and
' ence 'being had to the accom zo bodying our invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of 25 tion on the lino Llv et of Figs. 2 and 3o seinicylindrical case above said opening and 3 5 strip of metal G, to the lower edge of "which 4o supporting wheels K and provided with a Nrrn J OSEPII lf/XRBEL AND JOSEPH A. itjititlll SPECIFIGATION' forming part of Letters Application filed August 20, 1897.
To all whom, it nifty concern:
Be it known that We, JOSEPH PARBEL and States, residing at'Grand Rapids,in the county certainv new and useful Improvements in OarpetSweepers; and We do hereby declare the following to be ai' ull, clear, and exact'deseription of the invention, such as will enable othmake and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in the saine with certain new and useful feaparticularly pointed out in the f ims, referpanying drawings, .in Which f p Figure l is a perspective of a device einthe same with parts broken away to show the construction; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section of the same on the line 3 3 of Figs. 2l and 4, and Fig. 4 a transverse vertical see- Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents asWeeper-case having a broad top, in which is a large opening A'. B is a hinged to the caseAat one side, as at C, and detachably secured to the same at the other side, as at D, and provided with a sheet-metal liningr II. Surrounding the opening A is a strip is attached Va netting or screen E, upon which screen is supported, within the case B, a dampened 'sponge F. In the case A is a rotary-brush shaft l, driven by the driving and round brush (not shown) of the usual form for sweeping the carpet. The journals l of the 'bruslrshaft I is extended outward at one end and provided with a short brush J to or furniture and the carpet.
In operation the coarser particles raised by `the brush in the case A are stopped by the screen E and. fall into the dust-pans. The

serial No. sessie. (No modem' air-currents induced by said brush pass through said screen and through the sponge resting thereon, and the said sponge catches the liner particles of dnst that otherwise would iioat for some time and to a considerable cX- tent escape from the case into the room. Said sponge may also be so saturated with water that the Water will drip slowly upon the rotating brush below and thus ,dampen the same, which is often desirable in sweeping' some kinds of carpets. The strip Gandlining li keep the sponge from contact with the Woodwork. The brush J being outside the ease can be got into the angle of the base, or furniture and the carpet, and thus sweep the saine.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim, and Wish to secure by Letters' Patent, is-'- l. In a carpetsweeper, a case having a large opening in the top, a rotary brush and driving mechanism, a screen in said opening, a sponge above said screen, andan upper ease inclosing said sponge, substantially as described.
2. In a carpet-sweeper, a case having a large opening in the top, an upper ease cov-vv erin T said opening and hinged to said first named case, a strip surrounding said opening, a screen in said opening, and .a sponge sup ported on said screen, and a rotary brush be low said opening, and means for rotatingr said brush, substantially as described.
8. In a carpet-sweeper, a case having a large opening in the top, a metal strip snrrounding said opening, a screenattaehed to said strip, a ease above said/screen, a metal lining in said ease, a sponge'supported on said screen and i'vithin said case, a rotary brush below saidscreen and sponge, and means for rotating said brush, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we atti): our signatures in presence of tivo witnesses.
J OSElII IARBEL. JOSEPH A. STA'VEN.
