Description

UNITEo STATES PATENT OFFICE JAMES S. ALLUMS, OF CUSSETA, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON OR HAV PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 60,457, dated December 18, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES S. ALLUMs, of Cusseta, in the county of Chattahoochee and in the State of Georgia, have invented a new `and Improved Mode of Making Cotton and Hay Presses; and I do Vhereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists, mainly, in the mode of construction of the frame and press, as shown in -the drawings, and hereinafter set forth.
The frame is constructed with four upright posts', marked A, four side pieces or interties in each side, marked B, and two end pieces or interties in each end, marked C. This frame is suspended in the gin-house or on a separate frame on -joists D by means of pieces of scantling a. a passing under the interties B. Within this frame I construct the box E, by nailing plank on the inside ofthe interties B, and the four pieces of scantling b, which are let into the side interties. At the top of the box is a sliding door or bed, c, removable to flll the box and replaced before pressing. This sliding door is supported by the strong interties B at the top of the frame.
This press is operated by means of an upright screw, either of wood or metal, with the follower F and the straight lever L attached to the revolving nut e, or it may be driven by gearing and horse-power, in which case a Wellhole is made in the ground for the screwr to descend into, and thus bring the lever to the proper level to attach horse-power thereto.
. supports the screw by means of a ange on the revolving nut e. (More fully shown in Fig. 3.)
I do not claim the revolving nut or the lever, or the sliding door, or the screw operating upward; but
What I claim as an improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The mode herein described of constructing the frame, and supporting the same by strong iron rods, in the manner and for-the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the frame, so constructed, with the modes of supporting the frame and the screw. in the manner and for the purpose set forth. Y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improved mode of making cotton and hay presses I have hereunto set my hand 'and seal this 22d day of October, 1866.
` JAMES S. ALLUMS. Witnesses:
E. G. RA-IEORD, JAMES MGNEIL.
