Be it known that I, AUGUST KRAEUTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to punches, and more especiallyto conductors punches for piercing tickets, and has for its primary object to provide, in connection with one of the punchingjaws of the punch, a receptacle arranged in a suitable opening in the piercing-jaw, said receptacle being adapted to receive and store the piercings and, furthermore, being constructed to open automatically when filled with such piercings to permit of the emptying of said receptacle, whereby the punch can be used in a room without any danger of having the piercings drop upon the carpet on the floor.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the nature and for the purposes stated which shall be of a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient construction.

The invention consists in the novel construction of punch hereinafter set forth and also in such arrangements and combinations of parts, as well as in the details of construction thereof, all of which will be more fully described in the accompanying specification and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in'which similar letters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures thereof.

In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my novel form of punch. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, on an enlarged scale, of a pair of pivoted piercing-jaws of a punch, one of which is provided with the receptacle for receiving the piercings. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken on line a: in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4c is a perspective View of the receptacle for receiving the piercings detached from the jaw of the punch. Fig. 5 is a section of a pair of pivoted piercing-jaws of a punch provided with a receptacle of a slightly-modified form of construction, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the form of receptacle employed in connection with the piercing-jaws of the punch illustrated in said Fig. 6 for receiving the piercings.

In said drawings, Aindicates the punch, which consists, essentially, of a pair of pivotally-connected jaws a and a, respectively provided with the operating-handles a and a which are actuated by the usual form of spring 19, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1. The jaw a, of the punch has a pair of forwardlyextending portions a and a said portion a having an opening to, in which is movably arranged the jaw a, having the downwardlyextending piercer or punchingstud a and said portion a of the same jaw at having a correspondinglyformed opening a and being also provided with the usual form of female die or anvil 0, having an opening or perforation a, into which said piercer or stud a descends when the handles of the punch are pressed together. In a suitable hole or perforation in the forward end or nosing a of said portion a of the jaw Ct is a pin 01, the free ends of which extend slightly beyond the outer sides of said nosing. Pivotally arranged upon the said ends of the pin d is a suitable receptacle,preferably of the construction illustrated more especially in Fig. 4, which can be readily forced into the opening a in the portiona" and is held therein in any suitable manner, and preferably in the manner to be hereinafter more fully set forth, for receiving the piercings. Said receptacle, which I have designated by the reference-letter e, is preferably made of sheet metal and consists, essentially, of a base-plate 6, provided at one end with a sidee formed at a right angle, or approximately so, to said base-plate e, and said side terminating in a backwardly-projecting top plate e extending a suitable distance directly above said base plate e, as clearly indicated. The free end of said top plate a is suitably downwardly and outwardly curved, as at c. When said receptacle 6 is forced into the opening a in the portion a of the jaw a, it will assume the position indi- ICO cated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, with said lip or curved part c of the top plate a extending directly beneath and in contact with a portion of the under side of the die or anvil c, and whereby the several parts of the receptacle c, with the inner surfaces of the said opening a in the portion a of the jaw a, form a closed box or chamber to receive and retain the piercings cut from the cards, tickets, $50.,

placed between the upper surface of the die or anvil c and the shearing or cutting edge of said piercer or stud a on the jaw a. To retain said receptacle 6 in said opening a in the portion a of the jaw a, I have secured to the inner surface of. the side e by means of a rivet 6 or in any other well-known manner, a suitable plate e made from spring metal, which comes in frictional contact with one of the inner surfaces formed by said opening a in the portion a and with the edges of the parts a and a of the receptacle e holds the latter in place to receive the piercings. As has been previously stated, said receptacle 9 is preferably connected with the nosing a on said jaw a by having a pair of perforated ears or lugs e which embrace said nosing, operatively connected with the projecting ends of said pin d; but of course it will be clearly evident that this arrangement is not absosolutely necessary, and the said receptacle is capable of being held in place by means of the frictional contact of the plate e and the parts e and e in the manner hereinabove stated. To permit of the ready insertion of the receptacle einto the said opening a said plate e is preferably tapered and has its upper edge a chamfered, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4.

In Figs. 5 and 6 I have illustrated a receptacle e of a slightly-modified form of construction. In this construction the perforated ears or lugs c are dispensed with and the base-plate e is formed with a pair of upwardly-extending sides 6 practically forming holding lugs or ears provided with oppositely-arranged holes or perforations e whereby this form of receptacle (illustrated more particularly in Fig. 6) can be pivotally secured upon a pin d at or near the position and in the manner illustrated in said Fig. 5, the receptacle 0 being held in the opening a in the portion a of the jaw a .by the springlike holding action of one or both of said sides c as will be clearly evident. The punch for piercing tickets, cards, &c., is used in the Well-known manner, and when the receptacle e is forced into and held in place in the opening a in said jaw a in the several ways hereinabove set forth the piercings will be retained by said base-plate e and its several parts connected therewith in said opening a until the box or chamber thus formed will have become well filled with such piercings, when the latter will gradually force the receptacle e from its closed position in said opening a thereby indicating that the box or chamber is full, when by inserting the thumb-nail between the upper edge of the base-plate e and the lower edge of one of the sides of said portion a of the jaw a the receptacle can be removed from said opening a and emptied of the piercings.

By my invention I have devised a very simple and perfectly operative device for the purposes stated, which can be safely used in a room without having the piercings drop upon the carpet.

I am fully aware that changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the several parts comprising myinvention, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, without departing from the scope of m y present invention. Hence I do not limit myself to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several parts herein shown and described, nor to the exact details of the construction thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a punch, a pair of piercing-jaws, one of said jaws having an opening, and a movable receptacle held in said opening by frictional contact, forming a box or chamber to receive the piercings and to be automatically opened when filled with such piercings, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a punch, a pair of piercing-jaws, one of said jaws having an opening, and a receptacle pivotally connected with one of said jaws and held therein by frictional contact, forming a box or chamber to receive the piercings and to be automatically opened when filled with such piercings, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a punch, a pair of piercing-jaws, one of said jaws having an opening, and a receptacle pivotally connected with said jaw and adapted to fit in said opening and held therein by frictional contact, forming a box or chamber to receive the piercings and to be automatically opened when filled with such piercings, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4:. In a punch, a pair of piercing-jaws, one of said jaws having an opening, a receptacle in said opening, forming a box or chamber to receive the piercings, and a spring-plate connected with said receptacle by frictional contact for removably retaining said receptacle in said opening and to be automatically opened when filled with such piercings, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. In a punch, a pair of piercing-jaws, one of said jaws having an opening, a receptacle pivotally connected with said jaw and adapted to fit in said opening, forming a box or chamber to receive the piercings, and a springplate connectedwith said receptacle for removably retaining said receptacle by frictional contact in said opening and to be automatically opened when filled with such piercings, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. In a punch, a pair of piercing-jaws, one of said jaws having an opening, and a receptacle in said opening, forming a box or chamber to receive the piercings, consisting, essentially, of a base-plate 6, side 8 a top plate 6 and a lip e on said top plate, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7. In a punch, a pair of piercing-jaws, one of said jaws having an opening, and areceptacle in said opening, forming a boX or chamber to receive the piercings, consisting, essentially, of a base-plate 6, side 6 a top plate a and a lip e on said top plate, and means connected with said receptacle for reinovably retaining it in said opening, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

8. In a punch, a pair of piercing-jaws, one of said jaws having an opening, and a receptacle in said opening, forming a box or chamber to receive the piercings, consisting, essentially, of a base-plate 6, side e a top plate 6 and a lip e on said top plate, and a springplate 6 connected with said receptacle for removably retaining it in said opening, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

9. In a punch, a pair of piercing-jaws, one of said jaws having an opening, and a receptacle in said opening, forming a box or chamber to receive the piercings, consisting, essentially, of a base-plate a, side 6 a top plate e a lip on said top plate, and lugs e for pivotally attaching said receptacle to a pin on one of the said jaws, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

10. In a punch, a pair of piercing-jaws, one of said jaws having an opening, and a receptacle in said opening, forming a box or chamber to receive the piercings, consisting, essentially, of a base-plate 6, side c a top plate c a lip on said top plate, and lugs e for piv0t ally attaching said receptacle to a pin on one of the said jaws, and means connected with said receptacle for removably retaining it in said opening, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

11. In a punch, a pair of piercing-jaws, one of said jaws having an opening, and a receptacle in said opening, forming a box or chamber to receive the piercings, consisting, essentially, of abase-plate 6, side 6 a top plate a a lip on said top plate, and lugs e for pivotally attaching said receptacle to a pin on one of said jaws, and a spring-plate a connected with said receptacle for removably retaining it in said opening, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
