SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,511, dated May 3, 1898.

Be it known that I, JOSHUA D. MOSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orrville, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the washing-machine properly attached to a tub, the tub being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the connectingbracket and its clamp, also showing the pivoted arms. Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing a portion of the pounder-handle and operating lever or handle. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the handle-connecting device. Fig. 5 is a bottom or under side view of the p'ounder. Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the pounding-head.

The present invention has relation to washing-machines; and it consists in the dilterent parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Similar numbers of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw- 1n gs.

In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents a tub, which may be of any desired kind or style, inasmuch as the tub has no particular reference to the present invention, except that a tub of some kind must be employed. To one side of the tub 1 is connected the bar 2, which bar is formed of a length somewhat greater than the height of the tub, and its bottom or lower end is provided with the hook 3, which is for the purpose of embracing the bottom or lower end of a stave, and when placed in proper position comes under the bottom of the tub, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The bar 2 is provided with the elongated slot 4, said elongated slot being for the purpose of receiving the clamp 5, said clamp being so formed that it can be adjusted up and down in the slot 4. I11 use the bar 2 is placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 and the clamp 5 placed over the top edge of the tub, after which the screw-threaded thumb-screw 6 is turned so as to securely bind the bar 2 and the tub together, by which arrangement the bar 2 is firmly held in an upright position.

To the bar 2 is securely attached in any convenient and well-known manner the arm 7, to which arm is connected the swivel-eye 8, said swivel-eye being for the purpose of connecting the rod 9, which rod extends upward and its top or upper end provided with the integral curved portion 10, which integral curved portion is for the purpose of providing a means for connecting the rod 11 by means of the rivet 12 or its equivalent. To the rod or bar 11 is connected the operatinglever 13, which operating-lever is formed of such a length that itwill extend over and beyond the edge of the tub 1, said lever being for the purpose of operating the pounding-head 14, substantially as hereinafter described. I

To the pounding-head 14 is attached the handle 15,which handle is connected together by means of the flat connecting-bar l6,which flat connecting-bar is pivotally attached to the operating-lever 13 by means of the L-shaped bolt 17, which L-shaped bolt is connected to the operating-lever 13 by means of the nut 18. The connecting-bolt 17 is also provided with the collar or flange 19, which collar or flange is so located that it will hold the fiat connecting-bar 16 against the operating-lever 13 when the connecting-bolt 17 is placed in th position illustrated in Fig. 3.

The object and purpose of connecting'the handle and the operating-lever 13 together by means of the L-shaped bolt 17 is to provide a means for detaching the handle and lever without removing the bolt 17 from the operating-lever 13, which result is accomplished by releasing the nut 18, so that the bolt 17 can be moved endwise sufficiently to detach the portion 20 from the fiat connecting-bar 16. The object of providing a means for attaching the handle 15 and the operating-lever 13 is to provide a means for disconnecting the pounding-head when not in use. The pounding-head 14 consists of the metal portion 21 and the wood top 22, said metal portion 2l being provided with the cups 23, which cups are substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and, as shown, they are formed flaring, with their open ends downward. Each of the cups 23 is provided with the vents 24:, which vents are .for the purpose of allowing the air to escape when the pounding-head is forced downward. To the wood portion of the pounding-head are attached the bars 25, which bars are substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and, as shown, they are provided with the cups 26, which cups are located directly over the vents 24. The cups 26 are each provided with the corks 27 or their equivalents, which corks are for the purpose of closing the vents 24 during the upward stroke of the pounding-head proper, by which arrangement a s action is produced when the pounding-head is elevated, thereby increasing the eificiency of the pounding-head by causing the clothes to adhere to the pounding-head.

It will be understood that by my peculiar arrangement I am enabled to locate the pounding-head at any desired point within the tub, which is brought about by means of theswivel-eye 8, the rod 9, and the pivotal connection of the bar 11. The bar 11 is curvedi upward at its pivoted end and is so formed for the purpose of providing a freer move-f ment for the operating-lever 13 and at the; same time givinga greater longitudinal movel ment of the operating-lever 13 without changing the elevation of said lever.

It will be understood that the poundinghead is operated by means of the lever 13 and the handle 15, and that the handle 15 is for the purposeof guiding the pounding-head, and the lever 13 for the purpose of elevating and lowering said pounding-head.

Having fully described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of a tub having removably attached thereto the bar 2, provided at its bottom or lower end with the hook 3, and the elongated slot 4, the adjustable clamp 5, connected to the bar 2, and to the tub, the arm 7, provided with the swivel-eye 8, connected to the bar 2, the rod 9, provided with the integral curved portion 10, the rod 11, having connected thereto the operating-lever 13, the pounding-head 14:, provided with the handle 15, the flat connecting-bar 16, pivotally attached to the operating-lever 13, and the L- shaped bolt 17, provided with the collar or flange 19, and the nut 18, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
