To all .whom t may concern:
Be it known. that I, ARTHUR VVHnA'rnnv, a citizenof the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State ofPennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Mechanical.Movemena of which the following is a specication.
My invention `consists of a mechanical movement particularly applicable to a washing machineeembodying a plurality of beaters, means for operating the same in opposite directions,means for separating the beaters to such an extent that articles to be washed may be placed between the same, and means for connecting the body of a beater with the rimthereof, yand removing it from the same, as lwill be hereinafter set forth.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, `and so it is to be understood that the invention isnot limited tothe specificdetails shown and described.

Referring to the drawings.
1y designates the tub of a washing machine to which in the present case the invention is more particularly applicable. To opposite places of said tub are secured the standards 2 on whose inner faces are the vertically arranged beads 3 forming on the sides thereof on said standards the passages or ways 4 on which beads and ways are movably guided slides or sliding bars 5.
Within the tub are the horizontal devices, such as the beaters 6 and 7, one below the other, the body of the upper beater 6 being for-med of rods or slats S, whose ends are supported :on .and lsecured to the rim 9 asthc circumference of said beater' 6.
The lower beater 7 .has .its body formed of rods or slats 10, the connecting lpins 11 passing through V.the saine atan angle thereto, and ythe rim 12 which comprisesthe rim of Said beater 7,it bein/g noticed that the ends of the rods 10 are shouldered `and inFig. 2 rest onthe top of therim 12 and bear upwardlyfagai-nst theunder side of saida'im, tlniseonnecting said rods with sa-idu'im, but in order to assemble said rods Iand rim the inner periphery of said rim has vertical slots 13 therein scthat the adjacent endportions ofthe rods may be passed through `said slots and kthen `when the body of the beater is turned said portions are on the under side of the rim, .thus connecting said body with the latter, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. 'When the body is turned in the opposite directionfuntil said portion registers with the slots the bodymay be'lifted clear of the rim, so that when the upper beater `is raised toits highestposition, say above the top of the tub as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1, as will be hereinafter more .fully referred to, said body maybe removed from the tub' for the purpose of cleansing', repairs, packing, etc.
,It will be seen that the slides are of different lengths, the shorter slides having on their lower end the limb 14 which is guided on the beads 3 and guides 4 andfsecured to the rim 9 of the upper beater.
The longer slides '5 are passed freely through slots in the rim of the upper beater, see Fig. 6, iand extended to the lowerbeater below the upper beater and have on their lower ends the limb 15 which is guidedon the beads f3 and ways 4; and secured to the rim 12 of-said lower beater. Each slide has pivotally connected with it the link 16, the pivots 17 whereof Lare movable in the vertical slots 18 in the standards 2, thus guiding said slides and conseouentlv the beaters true and sten dy in their motions.
The upper ends of said links are connected by pivots 19 with the levers 20, said pivots being on opposite sides of the pivot or axis 21 of said levers, said pivot or axis being fitted in the slots 22 in the upper portions of the standards 5, said levers being connected by the operating handle 23 of the machine, it being noticed that when the levers are operated, the upper beater is .low-
ered and the lower beater is raised, thus separating the beaters, then the lower beater is raised, and the upper beater is lowered., consequently the articles placed between the beaters are subjected to pounding or beating and squeezing operations, thus washing the san'ie, after which said articles niav be moved from the beaters and consequently from the tub, but to accomplish the supplying and removal of the articles the upper beater requires to be raised to an extent above the top of the tub, so that the articles can be introduced thereunder and removed therefrom. For this purpose the slots 22 are elongated upwardly above the axis Q1 of the levers 20 to allow said axis to slide npwardly above its normal position and allow the levers 20 to be raised on the standards, and the beads 3 extend for only a part of the length of the standards terminating below the slots 18, and consequently some distance below the tops of the standards at 24 leaving the inner faces of the standards unobstructed above said terminals as shown in F ig. 4, consequently the top beater 6 can be raised to a greater extent than shown in full lines Fig. 1, to the horizontal position shown in dotted lines, in said F ig. 1, and owing tothe giving of the pivotal links 16 as toggles, see dotted lines Fig. l, it may be turned angularly upwardly, as shown in dotted lines at the right side of said Fig. 1, thus raising the upper beater whereby articles to be washed may be placed on the lower beater. In this motion of the beater, the left hand slide may leave the standards just above the top terminals 24 of the bead 4, as shown by the arrows Figs. 6 and 7. 'l` hen the upper beater may be restored to its noru mal place in the tub, the levers 20 lowering in the slots 22, the links 16 resuming their normal positions, and the left hand links reoccupying their ways 4, when the upper Vbeater descends and so again enters the tub,

Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is .Y
1. A standard, slides guided on said standard, independently-movable devices one above the other, one connected with one of said slides and the other with the other slide, said standard having therein a vertically extending elongated slot, link members pivotally connected with said slides'respectively, and a handled oscillatory lever pivotally mounted on said standard and pivotally connected with said link members, the pivot of said lever being vertically movable in said slot above its normal position to admit of the elevation of said lever with its pivot and the upper device, and change in angularity of the latter.
2. Separably independently movable devices one above the other. standards having vertically arranged beads on their inner faces, vertically slidable bars movable on and guided by said beads7 one of said bars being connected with one of the devices and the other bar connected with the other device; an oscillatory lever pivotally mounted on said standards, and links pivotally connecting said lever upon opposite sides of its pivot with said bars, said standards being provided with vertically extending slots and the pivot of said lever being vertically movable in said slots above its normal position to admit of elevation of one of said devices and a change in angularity.
8. Separably movable devices one above the other, standards having vertically arranged beads on their inner faces, vertically slidable bars movable on said beads, one of said bars being connected with one of the devices and the other bar connected with the other device, an oscillatory lever pivotally mounted on said standards, and links pivotally connecting said lever upon opposite sides of its pivot with said bars, said standards being provided with vertically yextending slots and the pivot of said lever being vertically movable in said slots above its normal position to admit of elevation of one of said devices and a change of angularity, said beads terminating on said standards intermediate of the top and bottoni. thereof and below the lower ends of said slots and the pivots connecting said links with said bars being upwardly movable in said slots above their normal position.
