S. FLOWERS. WASHING MAGHINE.
N0. 604.657. Patented May 24,1898.
UNITED Sra'rnc a'rENr Erich.
SAMUEL FLOWVERS, OF GALION, OHIO.
WASHING IViACHlNE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 604,657, dated May 24, 1898. Application filed December 13, 1897. serial NM (N0 model-l To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL FLOWERS,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-lvlachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to clothes-washers of that class or description which comprises a number of vertically-reciprocating cups which alternately force the water through the clothes from opposite sides.
The object of the invention is to simplify and reduce the cost of the machines and also render them more efficient in use.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a clothes-washer constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a central rectangular block provided with a vertical rod 2, having a handle 3 at the upper end. Pivoted to said rod is a lever 3, having a handle 4. Pivotally connected with the lever at points on opposite sides of its fulcrum are two bails 5, each consisting of a metal rod bent to form the vertical arms 6 and horizontal arm 7, formed with a central bend 8, which engages with a hole in said lever. At the lower end of each of said bails and secured to the arms 6 are two inverted cups 9, comprising the cylindrical rim 10 and circular top 12. Said arms pass through holes in the tops, and the cups are held in place thereon by nuts 13. Secured to said rims are loops 14, through which pass vertical guides 15, secured to the corners of central block 1, which serve to guide and hold the cups in proper position.
The operation is as follows: The clothes to be washed, with a proper quantity of suds or water, are placed in a suitable receptacle, and the machine is then placed on the clothes and is steadied and held in position by one hand of the operator grasping the handle 3. The bails, with their cups, are now alternately reciprocated by means of the lever, when the water will be alternately forced through the clothes in opposite directions. On the upstroke of the cups the water will be drawn up through the clothes, and on the downstroke it will be forced down through the same.
By my invention the use of rubbers is dispensed with, so that there is no liability of the clothes being injured.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- In a clothes-washer of the character described, the combination with the central block provided with vertical guides, of the cups provided with loops engaging with and movable upon said guides, the rods connected with said cups formed with central bends, the rod secured to said block provided with a hand-hole, and the lever pivotally connected with the rods secured to the cups, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affiXed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL FLOWERS.
