UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LIZZIE RITCHIE, OF PATCHOGUE, NEW YORK.
WASHBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,410, dated May 3, 1898.
I Application filed August'll, 1897. Serial No. 647,819. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LIZZIE RITCHIE, a
- citizen of the United States, residing at Patwhich is provided at its'opposite ends with chambers or receptacles which open in opposite directions and in which the soap is adapt:
ed to be placed. V
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification,of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side View of my improved washboard, showing the soap-holder partially withdrawn; and'liig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement aredesignated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown a washboard which consists of the usual side bars 5, a corrugated body portion 6, and a cross-head 7, which is provided with a transverse chamber 8 and above which is a cross-plate 9.
The chamber 8 is open at both sides of the board, and the soap-holder 10 is adapted to slide therein, and said soap-holder consists of block which fits therein and which is adapted to be moved in the chamber 8, and said block is provided at its opposite ends with chambers or receptacles 11, which open in opposite directions and in which a cake of soap is adapted to be placed.
It will be understood that the washboard is formed the same on both sides, or, in other Words, each of the sides thereof is adapted to be used in washing garments or other articles, and in either position of the board a cake of soap may be placed in one of the chambers or receptacles 11 in the soap-holder, and said soap-holder is provided at each end with knobs or handles 12 and may be drawn out at either side, as will be readily understood, and in either position of the board one of the chambers or receptacles 11 will be in position to receive and hold the soap, and said soap will always be convenient for use, and when the board is in use the soap-holder may be partially withdrawn, and when the board is not in use the holder may be pushed into the chamber or receptacle 8, and the soap will be retained in the holder.
My improvement is simple in construction and operation and perfectly designed to accomplish the result for which it is intended,
and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing it advantages. 4
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A washboard provided with a cross-head in which is formed a chamber which is open at both ends, and a soap-holder placed in said chamber and provided at its opposite ends with chambers or receptacles which open in opposite directions, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 7th day of August, 1897.
LIZZIE RITCHIE.
