SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,100, dated April 26, 1898.

To (2% whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OLIVIER B ELLEFEUILLE, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing in the city of Montreal, in the district of Montreal andProvince of Quebec, Canada,haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Needle-Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has reference to a needleguard composed of two pieces which are secured together in a suitable manner; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views.

Figure 1 is aside view, and Fig. 2 is an end view.

My needle-guard A is composed of the pieces B and G, the latter being secured to the former by means of the screw 0' and is so made as to overlap the top of the piece B at 0 and as the end b of the piece B is provided witha groove 7) having the exact shape of the inside of the curved needle D-that the guard is made for, the inside of the overlapping portion 0 of the piece 0 is made so as to exactly conform to the contour of the outside of the curved needle D, and, as shown on the drawings, so that if a needle with a groove is used the inside of the overlapping portion is made to protrude down into this groove, as shown on Fig. 2, so that there is Serial No. 628,770 (No model.)

no possible side movement of the needle with my guard, the object of making it into two portions being that it can be adapted to needles having any section whatever as well as to needles with grooves or without indiiferently,the whole oscillating around thepointE.

The curved groove 12 is formed concentric with the hub of the guard. The needle, the curve of which is also concentric with the said hub, slides in the guard, and the guard is arranged so that it is near the point of the needle when the said point touches the leather through which it has to be forced. The strain on the needle is very great when it enters the leather, and the guard supports it and prevents it from bending.

What I claim is The combination, with a curved needle having a groove in one side, of aneedle-guard for the said needle to slide in, said guard comprising a hub provided with a projecting arm havinga groove in its end fitting against the inner one-half of the needle, and a retainingpiece secured to the said arm and provided with a laterally-projecting cap bearing on the end of the said arm and having a groove opposite the said groove in the arm and a projection engaging with the said groove in the needle, substantially as described and shown.
