IMPROVEMENT 1N cHURNs. i
ANDREW J. VANATTA, 0F VANATTA, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 60,289, dated December 4, 1866.
TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN:
Beit knownxthnt I, ANDREW J. VnNArr, oi' Vanatta, in the county of Licking, and State of Ohio, have invented :i new and Improved Churn andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descripltion thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawingsforming part of this specicntion.` l
l The nature of' my invention consists in so constructing and combining a spurqvheol and `pinion .esto give to tlie dasher of a churn both a rotary andvertical hmotion, for the purpose of breaking the rotary current of the cream made by'the rotary dnshers, and at the same time agitnte the inert cream Varounrl the centre of the churn, by having independent motions, both to the rotary and vertical moving dashers.
To enable others skilledin the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed `tcn'lescrilreits construction and operation. I 2 i Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional elevation of my improved churn.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is c transverse section from the line a: 2,' showing the plan of the dashers.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
A represents the cylinder or barrel v4of my improved churn, which is of common form and construction, upon the top of' which is a cover, B, that is made in two sections, the said sections being hingedtogether at a, This cover is secured to the barrel or cylinder of the churn by means of books, e e, and yeyes or pins, t' t', The said hooks, e being secured to the barrel of the churn by pivot screwsn-nh, and ,the eyes@ pins, z' z' are secured to the lod or cover, B, by any well known means. Upon the cover, B is ted and secnned a shi frame represented by C. .To this frame, C, is attached the gears that drive `the 'clin Dflscgonmvho is provided with a shaft, E, which runs in a bearing, F, that is secured to and extends ,ont from `h upon the end of which is the crank, G, by which the churn is operated. This genrfwheel, D, tits into a corresponding pinion-wheel, H, which is also provided'with a shaft, I, `that run n `a bearing,` also secured to the frame, Upon the end of the said shaft, J, and joining the pinion-wheel, wheel, K, on the side of which ila crank pin, u, to which 'is connected ,the upper` and `0f the `pitnx lower end of the said pitman being connected to the upper 'nd of the dash rod, M, by ,the `pivot b dash rod extends down into the `cylinder' of the churn and is' attached to the `dash or lllenter, This beater, N, is attached to the rotary beaters, 0, (whichwillbehereinafter explaiuod,) by means of gibs, beaters serving the purpose oi' Ynays or guides for the dash or beater, N. Pis a beveled gcar-Wheelzloc secured upon the sido of the rim of the geaMvheeI, D, the said beveled wheel, P, meshes intcia` corresponding l bevel pinion, Q, that is secured to and runnin the hollow shaft, R, the lower ond of `which is soeur, 'the cross-piece, S, of the rotary dash, O. T is apointed gudgeon, lirmly secured `to the lower `cross-' bar, U, o the rotary `dash or beater, 0. This scid gudgeon runs in a bearing, Y, that is irmlyfasteued in the enligne `of `the bottom of thecylinder or barrel, A. Now, it will `be observed that `the beater, milice a ventisei rotating l tion, while the beater, 0, has only n rotary motion. The beater, N, rotates, upontheubearingat Yfupon the das M, receiving its rotary motion from the beaters, ,0, Y
The operation of my improved churn iseeasy, rapidand penfect. EByjntrodnclng :the or the churn, `then 'by turning the crank, G, `motion is imparted to `thelbeaters, OgandN thro the gear-wheels, H D `and l? Q. The gear-wheels, H D, operating `the beater, N, Merito cream in the cent1-,e of `the churn `is agitated, `and lthe rotary `currentof the .crpamnodm broken and a uniform agitation is created throughout `the whole body of cream. A i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim us new and desir-etto s ecnreibyliotters llstent l. The combination of the wheel D, and wheel P, with the pinions Hand ,for ,thepurpose'` f gx beaters N, both c vertical and rotary motion `at the same timevfso as to break the rotarycnrrento `at the sides of the churn, substantiallyaschown and described. v 2. I claim the `dasher N, havinga bearing Y, on the rod M, so este `have a rotary motiomot 1th@ spine `time n vertical motion, substantially as shown and described. Y
3. The beater `if), in combination withheater N, substantially and for thepurpose dcscribed.
